We will donate our nightly profits to War On Want. They are an organisation that fights global poverty in diverse campaigns. Our eyes are on Western Sahara, where the cause of the Saharawi people who have been living in exile for 30 years now. Igitego Inyange
The chosen charity for friday the 25th is the Igitego Inyange project in Rwanda. This project has been initiated a few years ago by the Rwandese Anathalie Mukundwa and the Belgian VSO worker Vincent Thiry, to help a village in the poor Gahanda village region developing themselves in as many ways possible.
Their aim:
– To provide secundary education and arrange funds for university.
– Access to medical care for all , by paying insurance and visits at the doctor. A doctor has already been appointed to the village through donations.
– To build a centre in the town in the near future. This centre will serve as a medical and social centre and at the same time it provides the locals space to store, display and produce their handcrafts. Also tourist accomodation will be built to attract western visitors, so that locals can earn their livelihood through social tourism, without the intervention of package holiday agencies.

Below some impressions of Gahanda and the project.
This time we selected the Chakana project in Bolivia. Chakana is a Dutch organisation who
provide support to the poverty-stricken Aymara indians who live in the barren highlands. The project we support will be for building greenhouses, so that they can build their own veg crops without fear of bad seasons that often occur.We will be happy to receive any donation one can spare. Nope, we’re not fussy for the sake of good support. Especially combined with a party!
The profits made on saturday will be donated to the Chiapas Indians in Southern Mexico, who are struggling to support their families and their livelihood, since the Mexican government does not take sufficient care of this remote part of the country. The Indians have to build all their schools and hospitals themselves and for this they need support from the outside world.
Maybe some of you will have heard about the Zapatista movement uprising, which can be seen as one the first antiglobalists who stepped up for their rights when their govenment did not act on their issues. We at Rebel Up! feel that we need to support these rebelling indians in their righteous cause.
At the moment a hospital is being built nearby La Realidad, which is situated in the autonome area that is not controlled by the Mexican army anymore. Funding is seriously needed for the construction of this hospital and that’s the chosen route our money will follow. Thanks to all you out there for coming out to the OCCII on the 17th!! You made this debut party a real success and by this feat we managed to raise about 300 sweet euro’s! This will surely give the people at Grassroots Projects a sincere push in their Chiapas cause.
We truly had not expected this many people with happy feet, creating such a superb atmosphere. We counted more than 100 people after midnight, who turned the dancefloor into a sea of bodies, rocking straight till the end!

Op deze avond niks van dat, maar wel vette cumbia. De sensuele cumbia is nu superpopulair in Zuid Amerika door een lichting van jonge artiesten die knutselen met deze oude volksstijl. In Argentinië specialiseren artiesten zich met experimentele geluiden, waaraan hiphop, dub en electronica wordt toegevoegd. Pinchado’s geluid hangt tussen dubby sferen en electronische kitsch in als een zeer dansbare cocktail! Verwacht een speciale live/dj set met de allernieuwste dansmuziek uit Buenos Aires. !QUE CALOR!

The Rebel Up! Soundclash crew will hit Utrecht with a global dance night @ Vechtclub in the barrio of Overvecht, *Utrecht northside*. As autumn is looming, we present a special Argentinian cumbia night filled with global tropical sounds! The warm character of the ecologically and self-built Vechtclub theatre fits perfectly for the atmosphere of this night.
DJ Pinchado (Julio Lozano) hails from Buenos Aires and is born and raised in the old harbour area of La Boca, home to local footie club Boca Juniors and birthplace of the elegant tango. None of that tango twisting tonight, but some seriously heavy cumbia! The sensual cumbia has become popular once again throughout all of South America and reason for this is a fresh wave of young artists who experiment with this old afro-influenced folk style. In Argentina a lot of artists have started creating experimental cumbia sounds, where dub, hiphop and electronica is added to this hefty stew. Pinchado’s special sound floats inbetween dubby spheres and electronic Boca beats as a very danceable cocktail! Excpect a live/dj set with the freshest dance music from Buenos Aires. !QUE CALOR!
The international Rebel Up! DJ & VJ crew (BE/FR/NL/AR) will add their crafty tropical sounds and colourful visuals to this South American adventure throughout the night. The night will be kicked off by local Utrecht spinner DJ Tommi(Fuerza/Balkan Beatz) who will let his cumbia heart beat for you and play some jumping tunes. Tiki Klazien will follow up with a tasty set of tiki cocktail sounds that take you into pure tropicalia spheres. yay yay!
On our nights, we always find it important to create global awareness and so we support development projects and charities. There will be a donation box for Stichting Ombú, a Dutch organisation forcussed on Argentina which helps local Argentinian organisations to improve conditions in the poorest shantytowns. This night we’ll have a special live guest from America, Process Rebel! Though resident in A’dam since this year, Process Rebel is Chad Jones from Seattle and has made a name for himself in San Francisco during the early days of the global mashup movement around 2002. First with Hypnomadic in 2002 (alongside San Francisco dj Soulsalaam), live cinematic dubs and sweaty drum machines mashed with jungle, drum&bass, ragga, hip-hop and “world” music frequently and beautifully destroyed SF warehouses and venues. He has since remixed/released for and played with the likes of DJ Spooky, Mick Harris (Scorn) Kid Beyond, MC Zulu, Sub Swara, Dub Gabriel, MC Coppa, to name a good few. That Maga Bo and Filastine are his spiritual brothers is no coincidence. Chad has had manycreative global producing going on (just see his site for an EARFULL!) and is currently recording as Other Weapons, which leans to a mashup of dancehall, dubstep, breaks & baile funk! Expect a live dj set where he will leave no global roostical border untouched, mash up da place! Check here for his latest mix!
We will also be joined by A’dam underground dj Marcelle, a truly eclectic dj by heart! She presents the real tasty weekly radio show Another Nice Mess @ internet radio station DFM.nu and strongly has the spiritual teachings of John Peel in her. A mashup nonetheless of all things crunchy!
And ofcourse all around this we’ll play our global Rebel Up! sounds and visuals to put you either in powersoca, rebajada, zouglou, lok geet, molam, kaseko, funana or you-name-it spheres!
The charity of this night will again be the good people of Telluris India. This Belgian organisation that provides aid to the Munda tribes in the forest state of Jharkhand in Northern India. I had a bit of a scare last week when I found a sneaky hacker inserted some code on the Rebel Up website. I don’t know if any of you dear visitors have seen any of it, but sometimes visiting the site a warning popped up claiming your computer needed to be scanned for viruses. It’s called ‘Advanced XP Defender’ or ‘XP SecurityCenter’; totally bogus software that gives totally bogus warnings that try to cheat unsuspecting surfers out of money after fake virus scans.
I don’t suspect anybody went and bought anything, thinking that the Rebel Up crowed is not fooled easily, but a malicious hack like that is really annoying. After some googling and cleaning and putting up some more defenses I think the site is save again. I hope nobody was inconvenienced by this.

After his amazing live set at Rebel Up! 1,5 years ago, Maga Bo again comes to the OCCII to bring his superb live sound. And not alone this time, as he is bringing the Brazilian MC Bnegão with him as the vocal support in ragga ruff style, also straight from Rio de Janeiro!
Expect a feisty night filled with delicious organic beats and sweeping sounds. Think Brasil, Africa and western electronic influences in one big worldly mash, just as we like it at Rebel Up! Maga Bo has just recently released his long-awaited debut album ‘Archipelagoes’ on DJ/Rupture’s Soot Records and it must be said; it was one of the musical highlights of 2008 (look at www.gonzocircus.com in the review section!). The album is filled with african rhythms, raps in local languages and a heavy load of skewed broken beats and dubstep spheres. Western beats have never been with merged so well with African styles as on this album! We hope he will bring some records along for your home enjoyment.
Bring your funny friends, partyhard parents, furry pets and so on and be sure to put on your smiley mood! It will surely be a whirlwind of global inspiration and new directions to discover. Support from your local Rebel Up! DJ’s, globally schizophrenic in sound and as always. Anything goes in our imagination; psychedelic Peruvian lama’s spitting out cumbia, Angolan and Zambian jazzy grandfathers with the heaviest swings of funk, beserked Sufi’s with ghostly spells, Cabo Verdian drum rituals by holy goats that make you go cuckoo and other earthly baba boom follies that will give you some kick up the cultural spine! ofcourse all topped by a hot spicy sauce of layered beats in the breaks ‘n’ dub sense of sound, oh yes. Not to forget the sublime visuals from VJ M & Normal Con Alas that will be playing all night. From now on we will always have 2 VJ’s working together at massaging your eyes and making you see the unseen! Come to your first good party of the year 🙂
Ofcourse the fundraiser bit…As many of you will know, things are not going well in Gaza at the moment. Around 900 people have been killed and over 4000 have been injured during the last three weeks. The majority of Gaza citizens are currently without water, electricity or gas. Food is running out, and around 80,000 people are estimated to have been left homeless.
We’d like to use this Rebel Up! in order to support the Islamic Relief charity, an international relief and development organization which has been working in the Palestinian territories since 1994. In spite of ongoing blockades and enduring limited humanitarian access, Islamic Relief Palestine has managed to supply and will continue to supply food parcels, medical supplies and blankets to the people of Gaza, co-operating with the Palestinian Ministry of Health, World Health Organization, and other aid agencies in order to alleviate the pains of the people of Gaza. Your donation may seem but a tiny step, but lots of tiny steps combined will surely enable something of a positive leap to occur in the lives of our fellow humans in the Gaza strip!
