This monday 23 Feb in OCCII, Amsterdammie!!!!!!!!!!

Konono N°1’s “Congotronics” album introduced the world to the strange and spectacular electro-traditional mixtures which are being concocted in the suburbs of Kinshasa, Congo. World music, electronica and avant-rock aficionados have all been equally amazed by this otherworldly music, which has driven the international press to come up with some surprising comparisons (from Can and Krautrock to Jimi Hendrix, Lee Perry and proto-techno!…).
The band was founded back in the 1960s by Mingiedi, a virtuoso of the likembé (a traditional instrument sometimes called “sanza” or “thumb piano”, consisting of metal rods attached to a resonator). The band’s line-up includes three electric likembés (bass, medium and treble), equipped with hand-made microphones built from magnets salvaged from old car parts, and plugged into amplifiers. There’s also a rhythm section which uses traditional as well as makeshift percussion (pans, pots and car parts), three singers, three dancers and a sound system featuring these famous megaphones.

Originally beginning on the streets of Boston in the late 70s and has recently begun playing again She has travelled through the stars to bring us the most wonderfully alien take on electronic street-song, channelled through a soul that has taken in UFO sightings, hiding from the US government, homelessness, communing, hitchhiking, and over two decades of playing the street corners, storefronts, and subways of America. A Casio battery-powered keyboard, vocal mic and echo & phaser controls are all the ingredients required for a live experience to align the spheres.

Thu 10 jan; Dakhabrakha at Paradiso, A’dam; 3 x 2 tickets giveaway competition!

Thursday 10 january, crazy Ukranain electro-folk outfit DakhaBrakha are touring around the EU and coming to A’dam to play in the Paradiso in collaboration with Gonzo (circus) music magazine.

DhakhaBrakha’s sound is quite perculiar; they mix local Ukranian folk spheres and orally transmitted cultural songs together with African percussion, as well as Arabic, Bulgarian & Hungarian influences. They describe their music as psycho-folk-hiphop-trance-acoustic-triphop-ethno-chaos. Right so, we can dig that! Afterwards the eclectic Gonzo (circus) dj’s will spin records for a dance or two.

Paradiso is giving us 3 x 2 tickets to giveaway to three lucky Rebel Up! fans, so if you like to be there this evening with a friend, just mail to rebeluppa_at_gmail_dot_com and cross your fingers 🙂
We’ll notify the winners by wednesday evening.

Also keep in touch with us through our Rebel Up! facebook page.

See you around!
