Friday 27th nov; Rebel Up! dj/vj @ Party 4 Peace Indian fundraiser night in Villa Lila, Nijmegen

Hiya,

Friday 27th of november VJ M and SebCat will be playing at an Indian fundraiser night, organisised by the good folks of Party 4 Peace. The night is in aid of Belgian organisation Telluris, which we know and support by heart. VJ M will show his Telluris documentary about the Munda tribe and projects. See here a version of it:

Telluris and the Munda from IndiVisuals on Vimeo.

VJ M & SebCat will be doing their Rajasthani live cinema set, a live musical-cinematic experience in which images of the big camel fair in Pushkar, Rajasthan will be mixed with sound recordings. In 2007 we made a trip to India and stayed 2 months in Rajasthan where we composed a roadmovie;  a story without words, but with vivid Rajasthani music and colourfull images as a narrative for an intimate experience.  Here a short version of it:

Live Cinema: Pushkar Camel Fair V 1 from IndiVisuals on Vimeo.

After this SebCat will play a dance set with his own Rajasthani recordings and some special, bizarre and modern folkpop from allover India. Because there is more to musical India than Bollywood & Raga’s!

and more performances too:

*DJ Arne van Funk-A-Flex
*Namasté (psychedelische mantra band from Eindhoven)
*Tula Yoga door Jaap Bresser
*Indian food provided by restaurant Maharaja

The night will start @ 20:00 and goes on till 2:00. Entry is free, though a nice donation is ofcourse much appreciated.

Saturday 21st nov @ OCCII, A’dam; Rebel Up! Soundclash *Rio vs Sampa Brazilian cidade clash* w/ Maga Bo(US/BR), DJ Tudo(BR) & Process Rebel (US)

Wahey, next Rebel Up! party coming up!

This one will be a *Rio vs Sampa Brazilian cidade clash*. We will guests from Brazil’s 2 biggest and most famous cities; Rio de Janeiro & Sao Paulo. Anyone familiar with these cities will know it; these cities are overly vibrant with music, culture and liveliness! For that very same reason they are also each other’s nemesis and created some good old rivalry. The Carioca’s (inhabitants of Rio) think themselves as the most life enjoying people while the Paulista’s (inhabitants of Sampa -or Sao Paulo-) see themselves as the centre of Brazilian culture. Oh dear, but on this night the rivalry will have a delicious taste where Maga Bo and DJ Tudo will be giving their best sounds.

Maga Bo (US/BR/Rio) is the messenger of things exotic, broken and mashed up. expect a live dj set with furious bass line that will wobble on capoeira rhythms. Ever touring the world as a soundman and general globalteer, it will be his 3rd time(!) already at Rebel Up! but it’s always an honour to have him. Both times he played with us, it was a FULL house! Check out his site or myspace for sounds & mixes.

DJ Tudo (BR) hails from Sampa and this is only the first time he comes to Holland! His sound is a varied mix of samba, bossa nova, capoeira , forro and other Brazilian dance styles with some sweet breakbeat and electro bass added for full effect.

During the night, your faithfull Rebel Up! crew will take care of globetrotting dance sounds, cult spheres and colourfull visuals. We also will be joined by US ex-patriate Process Rebel, living in A’dam nowadays. He’ll bring a full clash of rootsical mashups with a global ’up yours’ attitude :)

We also will have a special photo exhibition by Enno de Jong (A’dam, 1967), who has made an amazing serie about the street Children of São Martinho, Rio. This exhibition is a combined project of 1991 and a recent revisit in 2009. See below the photo of Marina in 1991 & 2009. www.PositiveIndustries.nl

As you know, we dig the charity cause and we have again selected Brazilian organisation IBISS, who do multiple street projects in the Rio area. We’ll go around with a collection box during the night or you can donate at the door!

Zaterdag 7 november @ Vechtclub; Rebel Up! Soundclash *Polska Rootz* avond

Rebel Up Utrecht November 7

Rebel Up Utrecht November 7

Place: Vechtclub, Overvecht-Zuid;

Brailledreef 9 (naast winkelcentrum Overvecht)

Kacky Disco! Gabon gospel-soukous-hop on a 80’s beat

Kacky Disco from Gabon. Not much known about them except that I saw them on a dvd last weekend, in a Congolese musica shop in Brussels. On the other side of the street there were the meathouses of Cureghem, where Romanian butcher shops were catering for Africans with signs that said *African meat*. Quite a cross-clashing setting tho’; African customers queueing up before the red/white checkered counters filled with heaps of sorted meat, the red neon colors slightly glowing on their dark skins while Romanian keyboard folkpop blared out of the little speakers. There’s some Eastern Europe meets Africa for you. Once again one of those unexpected cultural crossings that’s typical to area’s outside of the city centre of Brussels offer.

Back to Kacky Disco, we sure dig that name. They seem big into 70’s/80’s spheres as they mash different sounds together what you could describe as Africa meets West, except with way more emphasis on the African sound. Kacky Disco is mainly one man, who calls himself *le propulseur, le commandant en chef de l’Oriengo*. If you can understand some French, here’s an interview on Kacky’s blog, it’s sincerely rigolo.

Apindi Apindi, great swinging song; gospel & hiphop on a 80’s beat with african b-boy dancing, turning into straight up soukous!

and some funked soukous with karate kicking afro wigs.
