We have a new concert residency at Bonnefooi > Rebel Up Alive sessions. On every second Wednesday of the month, Rebel Up will gather with alternative artists from Brussels and beyond and will make us dive into global sounds from the underground scene.
Wednesday 9 march is our first evening, where we invite the NGHE Mediatheque from Molenbeek, with live concerts by Chien Fer and Mott Flyf.
MOTT FLYF Mott Flyf thinks singing is everywhere. In puddles, landfills, forests and stomachs. He believes that to capture it, one must be endowed with a powerful mediumistic love. So he falls in love and plays tunes and songs as the melody comes walking. His ritornellos walk, sad and full of hope, next to time and beg the sun to beat him up. Ruben Hernández Quartet (LIVE – Cuban jazz) Young Cuban jazz project that brings together four musicians drawn from the realms of jazz and world music. Combining the syncopated rhythms of Afro-Cuban culture with the rich harmonies of jazz, the ensemble performs original compositions and arrangements inspired by current musical trends. Always in search of unique sounds, Ruben Hernandez, the trumpeter and leader of the group, expresses his inner world through compositions that evoke the tenderness and freshness of freedom. Fresh Nunas (MZ – Bxl) Mozambican DJ Fresh Nunas is a multimedia artist who started his pro dj cultural career in New York City. Fresh is a veteran DJ of afro sounds, always keeping them grounded in the continent, for club audiences across the globe. DJ Zwalla (IT) & Sandy Martin percussion (CU) Alessandro Zauli aka DJ Zwalla is a globetrotter, a DJ, musician and respected tastemaker. Based in Brussels and member of the international HAPE collective. On the European music scene for years, he is the soul of HAPE events in Brussels, Venice, Niamey and N’Djamena and performs at several events and festivals. Zwalla is inspired by the emblematic artists of Cuban and Brazilian music, from hip hop to calypso, from rumba to techno and he catalyzes his sets in a harmony and a bomba of rhythm to share. Sandy Martin is a professional percussionist from Cuba. He has been a member of the Cuban bands Lachy and Suprema Ley and has played in Belgium at festival such as Couleur Café and Zomer Van Antwerpen, among others. Le Grand Mechant Loop (BE) “I prefer to make the little pigs dance rather than eat them!” Le Grand Méchant Loop (the big bad wolf) is a global underground DJ and percussionist based in Brussels. New release on Rebel Up Records, +5 years in the making, retrospective of worker class & migrant chicha cumbia from Discos Horoscopo label from Lima, Peru in the 1980’s.
Between 1977 and 1987, the Discos Horóscopo label produced the largest wave of Andean tropical cumbia in the world; ‘chicha’, a reference to the indigenous Andean alcoholic drink. The label was filled with contemporary iconic figures such as Chacalón y La Nueva Crema, Los Shapis, Pintura Roja, Los Ovnis, Grupo Alegría and other groups which today have a cult status in Peru and beyond. Together they created a unique style with the capacity to talk about both love and uprooting, unemployment, struggle of classes, internal violence and impossible loves.

Colombian band Sonoras Mil brings psychedelic tropical pop, Kiko de Gallo brings organic electro compositions in different colours, while father-son duo Betamax & Clive Bell combine experimental jazz and electronics. Owini Sigoma Band goes into spacey effects on traditional and electro tones via Brownswood label, while The Tonga Boys & Dr Kanuska Group dive into heavy ritual temple sounds. Tunisian duo Frigya brings mezwed & bedoui beats via Shouka label, Lisboa producer DJ Lycox via Principe Discos and South Africa gqom producer Griffit Vigo via Brussels Maloca label.
