Yo folks!

This thursday 19 nov Baba Commandant & The Mandingo Band in OCCII, Amsterdam! His shows in Gent and Brussels were simply amazing, so we can recommend you to see them and get wild!

Baba Commandant and the Mandingo Band
are a contemporary group from Burkina Faso. Coming from Bobo-Dioulasso, the group is steeped in the Mandingue musical traditions of their ancestral legacy. The enigmatic lead singer Baba Commandant (Mamadou Sanou) is an original and eccentric character who is well respected in the Burkinabé musical community. A sort of punk Faso Dan Fani activist for traditional Mandingo music, Baba continues to redefine the boundaries between traditional and modern. In 1981, he joined the Koule Dafourou troupe as a dancer. Later, he embarked on his current musical direction as a singer first in Dounia and then in the Afromandingo Band. His current band — when he’s not playing with the now-famous Burkinabé musician Victor Démé — is the Mandingo Band. At present, he is a practitioner of the Afrobeat style, drawing inspiration from the golden era of Nigerian music. Fela Kuti/Africa 70 and King Sunny Adé are big influences, as is the legendary Malian growler Moussa Doumbia. Baba plays the ngoni, the instrument of the Donso (the traditional hunters in this region of Burkina Faso and Mali). His audience comprises multiple generations and strata of Burkinabé society; he accordingly adapts his repertoire to his surroundings, which range from cabaret Sundays in Bobo-Dioulasso to the sound systems of Ouagadougou and are a formidable force steeped in Ouagadougou’s DIY underground musical culture. Juguya is their sound. Listen here >

DJ Alex Figuira (Vintage Voudou shop / Fumaça Preta)
Amsterdam dj Alex Figueira, born in Venezuala with Brazilian roots, has a BIG passion for vinyl; he is the co owner of the Vintage Voudou vinyl shop in A’dam’s Red Light district, a grand collector of vintage African and Latin vinyls, runs the Music With Soul label and plays in the bands Fumaça Preta & Conjunto Papa Upa. For sure he’ll make you bounce & swing with his delicious selections from Africa & around.

Alsarah & The Nubatones
Born in Sudan, Alsarah is a singer, songwriter and ethnomusicologist. She grew up in the capital Khartoum and Taez (Yemen) but since 1994 has called New York her home. The Guardian lauded her as“the new star of Nubian pop”. Together with her band the Nubatones she explores her love for Northern-African and Arabic music from the 60 ‘s & 70’s. Then the day after, saturday 7 Nov in Brussels @ Les Ateliers Claus, Baba Commandant will play after Moroccan band Lahcen Akil & the Chaabi Brothers (we saw them in Amsterdam a few weeks back, in one word > mesmerizing!)

lahcen akil

Lahcen Akil and the Chaabi Brothers
Lahcen was born in 1969 in the village of Tamlalte in the Moroccan High Atlas. Influenced by acoustic music and traditional songs, he started music very young. As songwriter, he performed his songs about the beauty of the region. He interprets his songs on a lothar that he made himself, with a wooden handle, a palm soundboard and goatskin. He is regularly accompanied by his brother on percussion.

dj’s Rebel Up! & Hisham Mayet (Sublime Frequencies)
dj & filmmaker Hisham Mayet joins us for a ping pong dj set afterparty, expect african beauties, rough folklore, guitar rock and global pop tunes from this true collector of musical gems!

Fri 26 Sept > Rebel Up! dj @ Post-Anatol psychedelic concert night, Les Ateliers Claus w/ Hayvanlar Alemi (TR), Powerdove (US), Yann Gourdon & Hervé Boghossian

Hayvanlar Alemi
Hayvanlar Alemi is a psychedelic folk rock band founded in Ankara. They got together in secondary school in 1999, when they were 14. Classical rock and heavy metal were big influences on teenagers in Ankara then, and they started their musical venture playing hard-and-heavy covers, but very soon self-discovered free improvisation and moved into a more avant-garde approach, and later on occasionally deployed traditional instruments, found-sound elements like live radio, and colorful stage theatrics. They were influenced by the new folk-infused experimental rock scene of the late 90s Istanbul, but isolated from any music scene in Ankara, their sound and song-structure diverged from their contemporaries as they incorporated elements from the findings of their musical research into their sound, which included folk, pop and hybrid sounds of South East Asia, East and West Africa, South America and Russia, as well as Jamaican dub reggae and Californian surf. In 2010, their album Guarana Superpower came out on outernational label Sublime Frequencies and they have just released their latest album Twisted Souvenirs on Unrock.
arrest
is the project of pianist Annie Lewandowski from Minnesota, a place full of things that are long and longer: church services, dinner tables, and worry lines, to name a few. Somebody said there are ten thousand lakes there; if that’s true, each of them shows up in some little way in Annie’s songs. She writes under the name Powerdove, which began as a band of one in California in 2007 and was soon joined by John Dieterich (of noise pop outfit Deerhoof) and French guitarist Thomas Bonvale (L’ocelle Mare). Her new album ‘Arrest’ was recorded in one day and features playfull ballads that sound soft and dangerous like stolen kisses, sensual yet filled with joyous threats from the heart that disregard reason.
Yann Gourdon & Hervé Boghossian : Ce duo acoustique créé en février 2014, joue une musique imprégnée d’un minimalisme primitif à l’apparente aridité et qui révèle sa profondeur dans l’expérience d’écoute de l’espace.

Sebcat is very proud to present his self recorded & selected Rajasthan Street Music double LP, out since March on US label Sublime Frequencies.  It has finally come out after some slow years selecting & readying the song, ever since Sebcat and VJ M undertook that trip to Rajasthan over 6 years ago. It has resulted in a truly special document of contemporary Rajasthani folk music in diverse styles with nice cover art work.

Our very own Rebel Up! SebCat will let us see contemporary street level India (Rajasthan) through his eyes but also through other eyes, through photographs, live movie clips and video clips. The Indian streets are the main theme tonight, as this is also the release party of the double vinyl ‘Rajasthan Street Sounds’, recorded by Seb and just out now on the amazing outernational SUBLIME FREQUENCIES label. The sounds on this LP are sincere and filled with context by who sings & plays them > no big artists, but the Rajasthani street folk musicians who have a tough life and never get the right respect for their musical skills within their own society. These recordings were made in 2007 with folk musicians on the street or in their homes, on regional folk instruments such as ravannattah violin, kamaycha cello, ektara lute of morchang jewish harp.

a sufi & hindu spiritual concert by the Ali Kawa Brothers (Rajasthan) who hail from a musical family of Rajasthani master musicians from the pink city of Jaipur. On vocals, tabla and harmonium for a true feeling of the trancendental islamic & hindu reverence sound that can be heard allover Rajasthan

The whole night will be coloured with projections of photo’s by Seb Bassleer, David Tesinsky, Maarten Van Der Glas, Vanessa Verbeiren, Jet van Zwieten and Neire Le Neiro, as well as movie projections of road & music clips by Maarten Van Der Glas in a different room. There should be fresh chai and spicy fried snacks available for a real taste of the Indian streets,

+ Hellvete (BE)
Glen Steenkiste alias Hellvete is a member of psych outfit Sylvester Anfang II and also of the Kraak and Funeral Folk label. He draws influences from old folk music and drones to make hypnotic tapestries. Tonight he will play a special warmup drone-out set of multi-layered harmonium & sruti box airwaves beyond the realm of raga into eternal bliss.

+ Dj’s of the night > SebCat’s Maj Tahal (cassette folk, digital folkpop, Filmy discopop & cassettes from India) et DJ soFa (Bollywood, Kollywood & Lollwood reissues)

sat 16 Nov > Rebel Up! Soundclash & In OK/Out KO present @ OCCII, A’dam; Cinema Soloriens (Marshall Allen -Sun Ra-, James Harrar etc) & the films of Hisham Mayet (Sublime Frequencies) + Rebel Up! afterparty w/ Sublime Frequencies

cinemasoloriens

CINEMA SOLORIENS – 20th Anniversary Celebration with special guests, acts and multi sets of electro acoustic and electronic odyssey.

Since beginning this ambitious project 18 years ago with Marshall Allen, leader of The Sun Ra Arkestra, filmmaker/musician James Harrar sees Cinema Soloriens as a constantly evolving creative and spiritual learning center. It is a multi-media performance consisting of James Harrar’s experimental and highly personal film and video images with a live musical rendering of soundtracks for each film. The musical concepts are created, directed and performed by Harrar (tenor sax, flute, bulbul tarang, reeds, voice and effects) with Marshall Allen (alto sax, flute, keyboards, EVI and effects) and Rogier Smal (percussion and electronics) plus a stellar changing line-up of gifted musicians such as Anne Laberge, Yedo Gibson, Vasco Trilla and Arvind Ganga.

The project places attention on Artist collaboration, exploring the moving image with live performance and when combined, an attempt to reveal deeper levels of interpretation within Harrar’s visceral film poems. These presentations also celebrate the early beginnings of cinema, providing live music to support and elevate the silent movie experience. Any musical incarnation of Cinema Soloriens reveals a group possessing a penchant for psychedelic rock, outre ethnological improvisations and Marshall Allen approved jazzy stomps of which these performances deliver in equal measure.

LINE UP:

set 01 trio :
James Harrar – tenor, ethnic reeds, EVI, voice and electronics
Marshall Allen – alto, flute, EVI, keyboard and effects
Rogier Smal – Drums, percussion.

set 02 big band :

Marshall Allen – alto, flute, EVI, keyboard and effects
Rogier Smal – drums, percussion.

Sublime Frequencies in North and West Africa: The films of Hisham Mayet

Exhilarating, hallucinatory, harrowing, ecstatic and surreal, Hisham Mayet’s films and audio collections reveal a region’s rituals, rhythm and landscape, with an aesthetic of extra-geography and soulful experience. Employing an unflinching methodology that continues to inspire contemporaries and audience alike, his many documentaries have been redefining the nature of ethnographic film, and continue to provoke and amaze in equal measure.

Vodoun Gods on the Slave Coast
A Film By Hisham Mayet
Sublime Frequencies – 50 minutes/2012

Hisham Mayet’s exploration of West African possession ceremonies continues in Benin. The cradle and birthplace of Voodoo, Benin was formerly known as the Slave Coast, and most of the slave industry was exported from its shores. Voodoo worship is integral to the every day lives of the people of Benin. This film, shot in 2010 during the country’s rich Vodoun celebrations, is an impressionistic lens on the myriad ceremonies that this rich and diverse culture has to offer. Showcasing intimate observations of a variety of Voodoo ceremonies: The cult of Sakpata (god of pestilence and healing), Egoun dramas shrouded in magisterial costumes and the secret police of the Zangbeto nightwatchmen, among other highlights. This will be the premiere screening of this visual feast.

Mayet will be premiering this brand new film as well as discussing his methodology and that of Sublime Frequencies, a label he founded with Alan and Richard Bishop in 2003. Highlights will include stories of his experiences with the now legendary clutch of Saharan guitar groups (Group Doueh, Bombino, Inerane) he came upon in the region, as well as sharing his many adventures travelling and documenting possession ceremonies in the Sahel for the last 10 years.

Followed by the AFTERPARTY with Rebel Up! Soundclash dj’s + Hisham Mayet for a rough exploration into global lo-fi rock and pop, unheard ethnographics and exotic dance sounds and other special outerworldly sounds.
