Thu 21 June > Rebel Up Soundclash @ OCCII, Amsterdam w/ The Dwarfs Of East Agouza & Babylon Trio

This thursday evening, a night of Arabic soundclash, choubi choubi & electro chaabi

The Dwarfs of East Agouza أقزام شرق العجوزة
Instrumental / Improvisation-based / North African percussion loops / Shimmering keys / West African tinged free jazz guitar / Krautrock-style acoustic bass.

Hailing from the Agouza district of Cairo, Egypt, this brilliant trio consists of Alan Bishop (Acoustic Bass & Alto Sax), Maurice Louca (Keyboards & Drum Machine) and Sam Shalabi (Electric Guitar). In collaboration with Annihaya records, the Akuphone label is very proud to present “Rats Don’t Eat Synthesizers” the long-awaited second album by the Dwarfs of East Agouza.

Following their acclaimed first album “Bes “, this new long play is composed of two hypnotic journeys: “Rats Don’t Eat Synthesizers” and “Ringa Mask Koshary” which was recorded in Cairo in September of 2015. Mesmerizing electric guitar parts, frenetic beats, both supported by the deep sound of Alan’s acoustic bass create a new magical Egyptian soundscape. Vinyl version is a limited edition with a beautiful hot-foil stamped sleeve that magnifies the red metallic rats and a wonderful printed inner sleeve.

Sam Shalabi (electric guitar/synth) (Land of Kush, Shalabi Effect)
Alan Bishop (guitar/saxophone/vocals) Sun City Girls, The Invisible Hands, Alvarius B., SUBLIME FREQUENCIES)

Wedn 4 May: Egyptian / Turkish concert night @ OCCII, Amsterdam

occiiposter_invisible-hands_www-1

a special Egyptian / Turkish concert night of friends @ OCCII supported by Rebel Up, even though we won t be there due to travel (Peru) and work.

The Invisible Hands (EG)

is the English translation of the band’s original Egyptian Arabic name: El Ayadi El Khafeyya. A band created amidst an unusual backdrop by Alan Bishop (AKA Alvarius B., member of legendary US band Sun City Girls and co-owner of the world famous Sublime Frequencies label), with Cairo-based musicians Cherif El Masri, Aya Hemeda, Adham Zidan and Magued Nagati. Songs – sung in Arabic, English, or whichever language they channel – are drenched in lovely psychedelic folk arrangements and vocal choruses with a nod to what could have potentially been music that surfaced decades ago but instead found its way into the future. The group was established during the summer of 2011. Their debut was recorded in Cairo in May 2012, and two versions were released, one in Arabic and another in English, with both on a limited edition double LP. Their second album, Teslam, is currently out on CD with the LP being released in December.
Hayvanlar Alemi (TR)

is a psychedelic folk rock band founded in Ankara. They got together in secondary school in 1999, when they were 14. Classical rock and heavy metal were big influences on teenagers in Ankara then, and they started their musical venture playing hard-and-heavy covers, but very soon self-discovered free improvisation and moved into a more avant-garde approach, and later on occasionally deployed traditional instruments, found-sound elements like live radio, and colorful stage theatrics. They were influenced by the new folk-infused experimental rock scene of the late 90s Istanbul, but isolated from any music scene in Ankara, their sound and song-structure diverged from their contemporaries as they incorporated elements from the findings of their musical research into their sound, which included folk, pop and hybrid sounds of South East Asia, East and West Africa, South America and Russia, as well as Jamaican dub reggae and Californian surf.

Sat. 30 June > Rebel Up! Soundclash & A/V Club present global lo-fi night; Alvarius B (US) + Sublime Frequencies dj set & Riquetik’s goodbye party

Hello all!
Time for a fresh Rebel Up! Soundclash night again > a special globla lo-fi night together with the fine folks of A/V Club. We have Alan Bishop as a special guest, who will play his Alvarius B solo project and do a Sublime Frequencies dj set afterwards.  Sadly, it is also Riquetik’s goodbye party as he is leaving Rebel Up! & A’dam to go pursue his academic career in Budapest.

Here’s the roll > >

ALVARIUS B
Rare Acoustic Solo Performance (starts 23:30)
Alvarius B. is the acoustic guitar/singer-songwriter alias of Alan Bishop, a major player/seminal figure of the American underground – a founding member of Sun City Girls and the Sublime Frequencies record label (Omar Souleyman/Group Doueh/Group Inerane etc.). This project sees Alan unbalance and entertain using a twisted song cycle blend of humour, politics and heartbreak with melodies old, broken and new – a lethal cocktail for the senses.

SUBLIME FREQUENCIES DJ set
Sublime Frequencies is a record label and collective with explorers dedicated to focus on acquiring and exposing obscure sights and sounds from modern and traditional urban and rural frontiers.

REBEL UP! SOUNDCLASH CREW
Especially for this night, the Rebel Up! crew will play eclectic vintage & lo-fi sounds from all corners and ages of the globe, from folk to pop, psychedelica, rock and backwards. Accompanied by grainy, vintage visuals to make sure there’s never a dull moment on the dancefloor

Profits on the night will go to NGO Bhakti Luhur in Malang, Eastern Java, which takes care of handicapped children. One of the aid workers is a dutchman who runs the excellent Madrotter Treasure Hunt blog, all about Indonesian pop, rock and folk music from the past with quality uploads.
