Saturday 27h of june; Rebel Up! Soundclash with The Ex (live & dj!), Wontanara Takkita & Rebel Up! djs *season closing night*

Hi all,
24_rebelup_web
The El Hijo de la Cumbia show last thursday was amazing. Fierce cumbia on rootsical waves, the OT301 quite filled with dancing and hopping bodies for a thursday night!

After a heavy month with the Sublime Frequencies & El Hijo de la Cumbia shows, we’ll be closing off our season with another special night, this time with the legendary global punk band The Ex. Since Arnold of Zea joined them, The Ex have taken their sound into a new direction with their ears firmly set on African sounds & rhythms. Expect afropunk with high jumping around levels!
Added to this will be the deep sound of Guinean drums by the people of Wontanara Takkita, who have already been playing their energetic African samba a few times at Rebel Up!

Andy, Terrie and Arnold of The Ex will also be spinning records later during the night, with a selection of african pop, new ethiopian sounds, crispy cumbia and global dance tunes.
Inbetween all of this, the Rebel Up! dj’s will play their spicy melange of global sounds, where no continent will be forgotten. VJ duties come from our Dutch-Argentine duo VJ M & Normal Con Alas, who will create candy for the eyes on the dancefloor into black & white and neon spheres!

Well, it speaks for itself; it’s gonna be some night! Hope to see you there.

The charity of this season closing night will again be Telluris India. This Belgian organisation that provides aid to the Munda tribes in the forest state of Jharkhand in Northern India. These tribes are part of the Adivasi caste and are the native inhabitants of this region. Their culture and way of life dates back to before the creation of Hinduism, 5000 years ago. Nature means all to these tribes; they have a natural religion and worship the nature around them.

By the hands of corrupted authorities that favour industrialisation, mining and lumberjacking, the Munda are on the verge to lose their land and culture forever. The forests have already been robbed of 70% of their original size. As a result, their land is plagued by erosion, droughts and the decline of flora, wildlife and trees!

The forest offers ecological diversity, life, medicinal quailities and protection from erosion and because the Munda are small time farmers and therefore need the forest in order to survive. Telluris helps the tribes with planting of new crops and medicinal plants, the digging of water wells, spreading knowledge about organic farming and other projects linked to their direct environment. The tribes can decide for themselves in which facilities they would like to receive aid in by Telluris, instead of such choices being made for them like most NGO’s do. Villagers come together to discuss, unite and motivatie each other for achieving their prime goals and Telluris helps them fullfilling these wishes. Nearly all the local employees at Telluris who work with the Munda, are Munda themselves en educated by Telluris. At Telluris, the most important thing is to actively let people take part in the process where at every interaction, knowledge is exchanged!

Thursday 18th of june; Rebel Up! MAXIMA Cumbia Night @ OT301

hola chico’s and chica’s!

coming Thursday we host a special MAXIMA cumbia night at the OT301, oye que super!!! despiertoweb

with very special guest straight outta Argentina:
El Hijo de la Cumbia (The Son of Cumbia)
Just 24 years of age, this talented producer comes to Amsterdam for the first time ever!

El Hijo de la Cumbia aka Emilliano Gomez hails from the San Martin area of Buenos Aires and started his musical career in 1996. From that moment on, he took part in several Argentine Cumbia music bands. In 2000, he started listening to other musical genres originating in ghettos from all across the world, such as Reggae, Dancehall, Hip Hop, Jazz, Dub, etc. Very much influenced by Colombian Cumbia music, he then decided to experiment by mixing Colombian rhythms with African ones and new styles. Known as a Sonidero producer for Mexican and American bands, he has worked in the most important Mexican and US music scenes. There, he made his remixes which were quite peculiar back in the day, with a clear inclination towards dub. El Hijo de la Cumbia aims at showing that all African rhythms can be respectfully mixed, that music overcomes all language barriers, and that music is not there for us to simply dance and listen to, but also for us to let our imagination fly and feel free.
