Saturday 8 Feb > Rebel Up Soundclash! present: FARIDA AMADOU& FRIENDS (ex-Cocaine Piss) | SPIRITCZUALIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER (Akuphone) | REBEL UP! DJ’S OCCII do-it-yourself mysticism | musical ritualism | €8 in before 22:00 / €10 after! No presale,
FARIDA AMADOU& Friends (BE, ex-Cocaine Piss) Farida Amadou is a Liège, Belgium based bass player, most well known for being part of the punk band Cocaine Piss and for her free improv sets with Steve Noble. Since 2014, she has performed with many musicians all over Europe, including Linda Sharrock, Balasz Pandi, Jasper Stadhouders, Peter Brötzmann, Mette Rasmussen and Thurston Moore, TONiGHTS FRiENDS Include; Terrie Hessels (The Ex) on Guitar & Frank Rosaly (US) on Drums. Listen here and here.
SPIRITCZUALIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER (Akuphone) Giving birth via impromptu instrumentals to glimpses of synchronistic magic, these Spiritczualics remain agnostic: are they magicians, or merely charlatans? Spiritczualic Enhancement Center is an outernational movement. A traveling nexus collecting dozens of participants to explore alchemical realms of sonic ritualism. Fusing DIY electronics with experimental improvisation and traditional instruments, recurring collaborators have studied under masters of Andalusian music, ethno-music research as well as important underground venues in Berlin and Hamburg’s musical scenes. Visual artist Dima Rabik contributes his miniature ink drawing style to all Spiritczualic releases – as well as a live-drawing projection during performances.
Spiritczualic (“cz” borrowed from the Polish / tʂ / hard “tch”) – a word-melange of “ritczualic” and spiritual, reflects upon the ancient practice of musical ritualism. As an idea, it greatly predates the physical occurrence of the Enhancement Center – on Christmas 2017, when an Ottoman building below the Gates of Jerusalem provided itself for a remarkable meeting. The trespassing people who happened to be there – admittingly bizarre participants synchronized by state-of-mind rather than tune or scale – began exploring sonic sessions of do-it-yourself mysticism. Witnesses of its ritualistic gatherings have indeed reported moments of divination – and possibly sorcery. This raises the question, will the audience once again behold the allurement of Higher Sources – or rather testify to trickery.“ Listen here and here.
Rebel Up DJ’s Before, inbetween & after, DJ’s Duckfood & Spliff will take you on a trip through the global underground
Nikanor – Bajo El Sol (RUP015) releases 15 january on vinyl, CD & digital Chicha cumbia, cumbia Amazonica and psychedelic rock from Peru via Brussels.
Nikanor is a Peruvian band based in Brussels, fronted by vocalist Marx Sánchez Sosa and guitarist Angel Loaiza. Together they play Chicha cumbia, a unique genre based on Andean melodies blended with tropical percussion and psychedelic rock.
The first Chicha cumbia bands appeared in Peru during the mid-1960’s and was very popular until the mid-1980’s. In recent years, ‘la Chicha’ is experiencing a renaissance, with bands and audiences from around the world (re)discovering its power and sound. Taking the big names and bands from the Chicha cumbia era as a reference, Nikanor started in 2016 as a cover band, to play the most remarkable and strongest songs to gain recognition in the Belgian scene. Since then the band has evolved into a group that writes their own music and songs.
Nikanor’s songs are a mix of rock, Chicha cumbia, tropical cumbia and Andean folk. Songs like ‘La Bajada del Kuraka’, with its Afro-Peruvian rhythms, or ‘Cóndor Blanco’, with its Quenas (Andean panpipes), make this album a trip in sound into Peru. Listening to the songs you feel like flying through landscapes and rhythms from all around the country. All of this in a rock structured format that invites to dancing and partying in a live setting.

In Atelier210 tamashek rocker Mdou Moctar from Agadez, Niger, will play as part of Autumn Falls festival. warmup dj set & afterparty Rebel Up SebCat& Funky Bompa.
MdouMoctar immediately stands out as one of the most innovative artists in contemporary Saharan music. His unconventional interpretations of Tuareg guitar have pushed him to the forefront of a crowded scene. Back home in Agadez, he’s celebrated for his original compositions and verbose poetry, an original creator in a genre defined by cover bands. In the exterior, where Saharan rock has become one of the continents biggest musical exports, he’s earned a name for himself with his guitar moves. Mdou shreds with a relentless and frenetic energy that utterly sets him apart. His latest album ‘Ilana The Creator’ is out on Sahel Sounds, listen here >
and for those of you in the city centre and in the mood for some griot music: Kaito Winse from Burkina Faso will play a FREE concert in Bonnefooi.
His concert is made from 9 songs and 9 shorts stories explaining the message of songs or instrument’s origins, depending on the mood. Chatting with audiences, Kaito Winse takes them to Lankoue, his village of Sourou from Burkina Faso. His songs reveal Samo land and griot traditions from Burkina Faso through ancestors praise, edifying traditional stories (tales). So many topics sung with a powerful and natural voice, which impose listening and silence before convincing by a melodious, bewitching and catchy texture via traditional instruments such as the mouth bow, Fula flutes, calabash and more. In 2020 his solo album will be released on Rebel Up Records. See a short video here.
Pantropical proudly presents Combo Chimbita‘s exclusive NL show during their first European tour. The New York-based Colombian band transforms Afro-Latin rhythms into melodic witchcraft, stripping away wordly façades into something bare and beautiful, like time travel through the lush tropics of yore. This is the stuff of goosebumps that you can also dance to. We’re also delighted to have DJ / producer Tayhana, who established herself as one of the most powerful musical forces on the South and Central American dancefloors.
✹ COMBO CHIMBITA (CO/US) | Names You Can Trust, Anti Records) Visionary quartet Combo Chimbita combine folkloric mystique, otherworldly psychedelia and a dash of punk attitude. Their latest release ‘Ahomale’ captures all that is essential about them: through Carolina Oliveros’ mesmeric singing the powerhouse drumming, hypnotic synths and expressive guitar and bass playing, the band fuse the perennial rhythms of the Afro-Latin diaspora with a modern-day consciousness, while tracing the prophetic traditions of their ancestry. Oliveros: “Ahomale resurges from the visions that we’ve been having via our music and life, and the lyrics reflect a manifestation passed on through our ancestors and the gods”. https://combochimbita.bandcamp.com https://youtu.be/nM093T8EMGQ
✹ TAYHANA (AR | NAAFI, Hiedrah Club de Baile) Based in Mexico City, Tayhana is a maverick DJ and producer from Argentina who has established herself in the global club scene with her whirlwind selection of Latin American and global beats. She has a fearless mixing style that comprises a variety of contemporary crossovers. In 2013, Tayhana co-founded Hiedrah Club de Baile; a party series that pushes the experimental edge of Buenos Aires’ underground. Tayhana also collaborated with the Salviatek label in Uruguay and NAAFI in Mexico. https://soundcloud.com/tayhana
✹ DUCKFOOD (NL | pantropical, Rebel Up) Duckfood’s awe-inspiring music collection absorbs anything from Renaissance, and African-diasporic styles to Moroccan trance. His DJ selections are extremely colourful and not preoccupied by categorization. Like always, with Duckfood the pieces of the puzzle will fall into place. https://soundcloud.com/duckfood
✹ BLONDEWEDNESDAY (PT / roffa) Blondewednesday wanders around in Roffa’s club microcosm in support of events, artists and initiatives. She is the founder of the Voyager collective, studies sonology at the Royal Conservatory and, more importantly also has a penchant for pantropicalisms. She will be closing the night.
