Fri 13 Dec: Rebel Up @ Giraffes & Penguins, KulturA, Liege

Oh yes, time again for a Giraffes & Penguins weekender in Liege + Brussels.

Starting on friday the 13th (woohoo!) in Liege at the amazing KulturA club.
Arab Bass night with special guest Ghoula from Tunisia and Liege guest Cedric Blavier. hosted by Rebel Up, Le Grand Mechant Loop & Tropical DJipsies.

We’ll dive together into the infinite richness of arab music and its evolution from traditional forms to the most contemporary and wild electronic sounds.

Ghoula (TN/FR)
Ghoula is a tunisian self-made musician and producer. In Tunisia, music has been a generational vehicle for popular symbols, images and myths. Despite its small size, Ghoula sees his native country as a north African crossroad where legacies came to settle. As a producer and multi-instrumentalist, Ghoula creates genre-defying sets through both acoustics and samples. Obsessed with North African multimedia heritage, Ghoula has been digging up vinyls from flea markets and old Tunisian medinas, bringing back vestiges of forgotten music cooked on top of contemporary upbeat dance rhythms. His album Hlib el Ghoula was released on the Shouka label and he is now preparing his second album.

Cédric Blavier (Liege)
A music lover, digger and dj, Cédric Blavier makes his weapons in his native Belgium, between Liège and Brussels. Amateur of ultra-dancing ethnic music as well as planing electro downtempo, he succeeds in surprising sets to combine the effective and the experimental, the organic and the synthetic, the modern and the traditional. His musical synthesis meets a growing success in the world of electronic music, with notably appearances noticed in the festivals Nuits Sonores, Chateau Perché (France) or Taka Tuka (Hungary)!

yes yes, Recyclart Holidays festival is back again!
in the new venue with the renovated rooms and big pavé courtyard. food, music, drinks and more.

This friday a real special night with 2 live concerts between punk jazz, psyche folk and many other outernational sounds. and a Rebel Up dj set before, between & afterparty.

Echoes Of Zoo (BE)
Belgian jazz cat quartet with a animalistic punk jazz sound. Spearheaded by Nathan Daems (Black Flower), Falk Schrauwen, Bart Vervaeck and Lieven van Pée. Sometimes beastly violent, then again erudite & delicate. The generosity of the band works radically contagious on audiences. With echoes from the Balkans, the middle east but just as much from the nervous urban context. In other words, our village fanfare, which is an ode to the hybridity of Molenbeek. Listen here.

Cyril Cyril (CH)
Ancestral sounds from the underbelly of psychedelic folk. The duo Cyril Cyril (of La Tene / Bongo Joe Records) produces sounds that make you long for a nomadic existence in unknown mountains. Armed with a banjo, guitar, drum kit and prophetic words, they take us like a phoenix to the dance floor. Listen to their album here.

Rebel Up will mix up raw punk with spiritual jazz to outernational psychedelic beauties and ethnic folklore.

Saturday 15 Dec > Rebel Up x Akuphone label night w/ Ko Shin Moon live + dahaW ⅃ꓘ@ OCCII, Amsterdam

Rebel Up Soundclash x Akuphone label night, with live sets by Amsterdam duo dahaW ⅃ꓘ and French duo Ko Shin Moon.

Imagine an outernational sound that defies borders, the meeting of ethnic folk music in underground spheres. Sound from the past brought alive into the present via the frequencies and vibrations of strings, percussion and analogue synths. The cultural counterculture against the right wing tendencies and normalities of today will not be silenced. We want you to be part of this, join our ritual as we dance the night away to beautiful songs and hidden gems from around the world.

Earlier in the day we will play a live session at Red Light Radio from 17-18h.
stream us here > http://redlightradio.net

 dahaW ⅃ꓘ (GR/SYR) *live*
Somewhere was the beginning/Somehow will be the end/Everything is chaos/All is ONE “KL wahad” (Oud/folk guitar). In their first ever concert, they will explore the possibilities of the endless improvisation between borders and freedom.

Ko Shin Moon (FR) *live*
Paris duo Axel Moon and Niko Shin blur temporal and geographical boundaries. As Ko Shin Moon they mix acoustic instruments from different regions of the world though analogue machines, traditional instruments, electronic sampling and field recordings, taking the stage with a Saz and heaps of analogic synths. The first album of the band is a bodily trip through hybrid territories, fantasy soundscapes and colorful collages: from Oriental Europe to Northern Africa, Middle East or Southeast Asia and beyond. Reversing analogical listening in digital synthesis, as music for imaginary traveling in dancefloor trance. After numerous summer festivals allover Europe and Morocco, they have just returned from a residency in Caïro, Egypt and played at Trans Musicales Rennes Festival.

DJ Cheb Gero (Akuphone label / FR)
Genuine music lover and chronic collector, Cheb Gero has cleared up and digged into musical worlds ever since his teens. In 2015, He launched outernational label Akuphone in an “archiving” spirit, drawn by a desire to “explore the world through music”. Far from supporting a romantic or fetishist vision of extra-Western music, the label aims at linking these productions to their historical and political contexts, placing them back in the social and cultural conditions in which they emerged. He hosts the radio shows Decolonize Ur Mind and Radio Gero, as well as Parisian Northern African music nights such as Belleville Habibi. Check out his live cassette mix >

Rebel Up is a full force: making remixes, drop mixtapes, hosting the Nightshop radio show on Radio Campus Bxl and live sessions on Kiosk Radio. Earlier this year Rebel Up Records label has been kickstarted the with cutting edge releases from Ghana, Iraq, Mexico, Tunisia, Morocco & Bxl out now.
