Silvino Branca Trio * live funaná * (Cabo Verde/Lisboa)
Born in the neighbourhood of S. Domingos (Santiago island, Cabo Verde), Silvino Branca is an important figure in modern funaná, part of the generation that inherited the sound of Codé di Dona, Sema Lopi, Julinho, Bitori or Tchota Suari. Like them, Silvino Branca is a ‘homi di gaita’ (accordion man) and fully embodies the new funaná generation raised in the ghettos of Cabo Verde, where he started playing at the tender age of 7. With the inspiration and influence of the old masters, he brings traditional funaná in its newest accelerated style: Cotxi Pó. A wild mix of shorter funaná accordion melodies with abrupt changes and more obvious hypnotism, dropping lyrics and references to times of poverty, drought and persecution experienced by the previous generation. These roots, strength and muscle have made the Cotchi Pó style extremely popular in Cabo Verde. Silvino is joined by bass guitar player Carlos da Veiga (Julinho da Concertina / Pedrinho band) and his wife Maria Das Dores Diop on ferro. Their Cotxi Pó sound is feverishly psychedelic with long trance-like compositions, the pace never slows down. Can you keep up? Puxa!

Celeste Mariposa is also a label imprint, releasing talented Luso-African artists living in the Lisboa area such as Chalo Correia and Julinho da Concertina (both played in Bxl the last few years). DJ Kolt (Lisboa/Sao Tomé / Príncipe Discos)
Adjalme Noronha aka Kolt is the founding member of the Blacksea Não Maya crew from Lisboa on the other side of the Tejo river, known as Margem Sul. Together with Dj Perigoso, Dj Joker and his younger brother Noronha they have released 2 LP’s on the crunching Principe Discos label from Lisboa. The Blacksea Não Maya sound is an urban blend of Afro Portuguese ghetto beats, spanking percussion and electronic tones, like slower funaná crossed with the rudiments of kuduro, tarraxo and socopé rumba. His younger brother DJ Noronha played at our Festa Afro Tuga #2 night in 2017 and halfway his set the Brussels police stopped the party. that’s how wild it got. This time Kolt will take us till the end!

Wed 7 June > Africa Negra concert @ Muziekpublique, Bxl > Sao Tomé Afro funk

Africa Negra in Brussels!
The legendary Sao Tomé band, only show in Belgium @ Muziekpublique.

The band is extremely renowned in the lusophone African countries and its worldwide diaspora, be it Europe or North and South America (Colombia especially!), and are loved for their own inimitably guitar based style of heavenly mellowed São Tomé Rumba, Soukous or Socopé, with blissful hints of Highlife. Their first three records are highly sought after by record collectors and unsung gems of african insular music. If you are not familiar with it, here are a few of their classics of our own choice > Carambola, Que Santomé, Nao Nao Senhor.

They have undergone through several different formations; but never really stopped and their current formations includes three members from the early days  (the charismatic lead singer João Seria, lead guitar player Leonildo Barros and bass guitarist Albertino). In 2014 they celebrated their 40th anniversary and that brought  the band back to their brother country of Portugal for a few performances (Lisbon at Club B’leza and FMM Festival in Sines), something which hadn’t happened since the early 80’s as well as a historical first appearance at in Berlin at the Weltmusik Festival. They had never played outside of Portugal before; even if they kept busy in their home country. Here the video of their performance on national television.

We made a special Rebel Up edit for this concert, check it here and free to download! 🙂

Fri 17 July > Puxa: Luso-African Dance Night @ Recyclart Bxl w/ Chalo Correia (AN/PT), Tabanka (CV), Celeste Mariposa dj’s (PT) & Rebel Up!

recyclart_17juli2015 Yo folks, PUXA!!!

On Friday 17th Rebel Up! helps organising a very special night at Recyclart during the always amazing Holidays festival.
as the title says > Puxa: Luso African Dance Night stands for a night filled with African dance music from the Lusophone countries such as Angola and Cabo Verde with styles like Semba, Funaná and more. Expect some serious tropical sounds impossible not to dance to.

‘Puxa’ means ‘pull’ in Portuguese (and not ‘push’ as would seem logical) and is used as a musical shout to pull your dance partner closer to you. Be ready to hear Puxa! night long!

Live concerts by Chalo Correia and Band from Angola via Lisboa, Tabanka from Cabo Verde via Rotterdam and the Celeste Mariposa dj’s from Lisboa.

Chalo Correia is Gonçalves António Correia, an Angolan musician and singer who grew up with Semba music in his blood. Chalo was born in Luanda, the capital of Angola, in 1968. During his boyhood he was fortunate to encounter musicians from revolutionary semba bands like Os Merengues, and Os Kiezos. He moved to Lisboa, Portugal in the beginning of the 90s and started to learn the classical guitar on autodidact and academic level with a strong will to make it by playing vintage Angolan music. His debut album ‘Kudihohola’ has just been released in June by Celeste/Mariposa Discos and is testimony to the development of his remarkable vision on Angolan music. Chalo Correia as a band retains the explosive, organic sounds of Semba and Rebita, but also remains in touch with the modern urban afro music scene in Lisbon. Semba is the swinging afro style from Angola, it comes from the word Masemba, which means ‘belly bumping’, a reference to some serious tight dancing. It’s the original base for styles like Brazilian Samba, Kizomba, Rebita, Kazukuta and it inspired the birth of urban Kuduro sound. Check his new video below for that sweet Semba sound.

Tabanka is a 7 piece Cabo Verdian band from Rotterdam, playing the fast swinging funaná music, thé dance sound of Cabo Verde. Their delirious funaná is ruled by the diatonic accordeon (gaita) and the ferrinho (metal stick) for some scraping rhythms and changing speeds. The group got its inspiration by generational musicians such as Bulimundo and Américo Brito but with their own modern interpretation and sound. Check it out! >

The Celeste / Mariposa dj duo run the famous Afro-Baile dance nights in Lisboa where they bring the Lusophone music culture together in sound. Their research is all about music from the former African Portuguese colonies; Angola, Kaapverdië, Guinee Bissau, Mozambique and Sao Tomé & Principé, digging up old vinyls on markets and visiting studio’s in Lisboa. They just started their own label Celeste Mariposa Disco’s on which they released Chalo Correia and for sure more Luso African releases will follow! Want to see how special they make it happen on their night? Check this video >
