Sun 21 May > Rebel Up! @ Ancienne Belgique, Latin Day w/ Systema Solar (CO), La Chiva Gantiva (CO/Bxl), Orkesta Mendoza (MX) and La Negra Albina (ES/Bxl)

This sunday @ Ancienne Belgique > cumbia, mambo, rocknroll, countrytwang, champeta, etceterarara

SYSTEMA SOLAR is a crazy Colombian collective ‘from near the Caribbean’ and you might already know them from other nights & festivals? Apparently they will be bringing ‘berbenautika’ and that is then a cross between the champeta ‘pikos’ soundsystems and the ‘verbena’ parties!? Or, as they say: ‘Whatever. Party!’

LA CHIVA GANTIVA is also of Colombian origin but is known to dancing music-lovers as international, diverse, from Brussels, and even as ‘neighbour to AB’. In 2017, they finally release a 3rd album. We’re happy to repeat it too: with their extra tambore, alegre, llamador and maracones they are sure to get you back on the champeta, chirimia and mapalé!

ORKESTA MENDOZA gathers in Tucson, Arizona, and is linked to Calexico via their frontman Sergio Mendoza. Here is a phenomenally infectious mix of texmex, cumbia, mambo, merengue, ranchero, rock‘n’roll, country-twang, psychedelica & Perez Prado… The whole hot hog, wittily played with class, passion, and pleasure (and released on the brilliant Glitterbeat label!)

LA NEGRA ALBINA, our friend Paula Leon lead this group: as homebase Brussels – on the street or in parks if need be – but most definitely with Latin or Hispanic or South America roots, and what they present is quite simply extra-territorially enjoyable.

Rebel Up! promotes > concert Sonido Gallo Negro (Mexico) @ Recyclart, Bxl

Sonido Gallo Negro is a nine-piece combo from Mexico City. With Farfisa organ, theremin and a pack of percussion, they combine cumbia sonidera, huayno, boogaloo and chicha with psychedelics and spaghetti western soundtracks, garagerock and 60’s surf. The collective signed in 2011 as the first latino band at Glitterbeat Records (Bombino, Tamikrest, …) and has two wonderful albums in the meanwhile. Exotic, psychedelic, but not to be missed. The black cock will crow! Spooky & hot!

with support by Mexican-Bruxellois Memo Pimiento and cumbialista Gaetano Dub.

Sun 2 Apr > *Uproot* book presentation by Jace Clayton / DJ Rupture @ NGHE Mediatheque, Bxl

On Sunday > book presentation & world music 2.0 tunes
*Uproot: Travels in 21st- Century Music and Digital Culture* by Jace Clayton aka DJ Rupture.

In 2001 Jace Clayton was an unknown DJ who recorded a three-turntable, sixty-minute mix and put it online to share with friends. Within weeks, Gold Teeth Thief became an international calling card, whisking Clayton away to play a nightclub in Zagreb, a gallery in Osaka, a former brothel in Sao Paolo and the American Museum of Natural History. Just as the music world made its fitful, uncertain transition from analog to digital, Clayton found himself on the front lines of creative upheavals of art production in the twenty-first century globalized world, where he coined the term *world music 2.0*.

Uproot is a guided tour of this newly-opened cultural space. With humor, insight, and expertise, Clayton illuminates the connections between a Congolese hotel band and the indie-rock scene, Mexican rodeo teens and Israeli techno, and Whitney Houston and the robotic voices in rural Moroccan song, and offers an unparalleled understanding of music in the digital age. With the help of musical examples and video’s, Clayton will present his book to make your musical world hell of a lot richer.

His book Uproot: Travels in 21st Century Music and Digital Culture was published in 2016 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

Jace Clayton is an artist and writer based in Manhattan, also known for his work as Dj Rupture. Clayton uses an interdisciplinary approach to focus on how sound, memory, and public space interact, with an emphasis on low-income communities and the global South.

As DJ /rupture, he has released several critically acclaimed albums and hosted a weekly radio show on WFMU for five years (which was also broadcasted at Radio Panik Bxl). Clayton’s collaborators include filmmakers Jem Cohen, Joshua Oppenheimer, poet Elizabeth Alexander, singer Norah Jones, and guitarist Andy Moor (The Ex).

Recent projects include Sufi Plug Ins , a free suite of music software-as-art, based on non-western conceptions of sound and alternative interfaces; Room 21, an evening-length composition for 20 musicians staged at The Barnes Foundation; and The Julius Eastman Memorial Dinner, a touring performance piece for grand pianos, electronics, and voice.

Fri 20 Jan > Rebel Up! @ Muevelo, Universal Club, Bxl

Muevelo has finally landed in Brussels, this is their 1st party and surely not the last!

The party originally hails from Paris, with monthly residences in venues such as l’Alimentation Générale or l’International and always a flurry of special guests from Latin America & elsewhere. The parties specialise in furious *tropical* music, the biggest shakers from Latin America, the Caribbean & beyond.

Rebel Up!, Max le Daron, Grandpamini, Pedrolito et MC C-Imperatriz will put the dancefloor on fire with Reggaeton, Merengue, Moombahton, Cumbia, Dancehall, Tropical Bass and more.

Thu 28 July; Rebel Up! @ Pantropical > DJ Tetris (MX), Duckfood & Chris Baas

First time ever introduction to tribal guarachero in NL?!
T3tris

DJ TETRIS (mx | n.a.a.f.i., guaracha)
DJ Tetris, from the southern state of Oaxaca, has been a key part of the Mexican tribal guarachero scene for quite some time now. The origins of this particular style of dance music are from Monterrey and is characterized by the use of pre-hispanic rhythms, cumbia, and electronic beats, mixed with flute melodies, accordeon and synthesizers. With his signature style (a mix of tribal guarachero, Mexican fanfare, Mariachi en musica norteña Tetris quickly found a home with the N.A.A.F.I. collective (Lao, Siete Catorce, Mexican Jihad, Fausto Bahia). N.A.A.F.I. are famed for their special events and their unconventional ways of celebrating street/subculture. Tetris’ ultra-danceable ‘Costeño’ came out on N.A.A.F.I. in 2014.

DUCKFOOD (nl | rebel up!, pantropical)
Always on the search for new sounds from around the globe, Duckfood’s massive music collection absorbs anything from renaissance to Moroccan trance. His DJ selections are colourful and not hampered by any preoccupation about genre. Duckfood is connected to both Rebel Up! and Pantropical.

CHRISTIAN BAAS (nl | meanwhile in manolya, pantropical)
We threw him in the deep end with his maiden Pantropical set at the MDOU MOCTAR / ChupameElDedo double bill (14.07.16), but this young man unequivally impressed with his skilful set, that even ended up as a live jam with Mdou’s 2nd guitarist.
