Sun 14 Jan: Rebel Up @ Het Nieuwe Programmeren: Netwerkevent Global Sounds, Ancienne Belgique, Bxl

This sunday 14/01, a special network event in Ancienne Belgique, curated by Dutch/Belgian magazine Gonzo (circus) and DeBuren.

Global Sounds: another buzzword or just the key to attract a more diverse audience? And what are Global Sounds? And does an African band attract an African audience by definition? Programmers struggle with it, sometimes make radical choices or lose their course. For those who open the gate, it is an adventurous trip. By trial and error. It is an introduction to new actors from the field, new partners and a search for new audiences.

Together with Gonzo (circus) and deBuren, concert hall AB invites you to immerse yourself in The New Programming and Global Sounds one afternoon! with keynotes and discussions.

Our Rebel Up SebCat will be in a panel to discuss about new ways of programming global sounds in Belgium & Netherlands, together with our friend Rrita Jashari (VK Concerts), Marriette Groot (Underbelly media) and Kurt Overbergh (AB).

It’s free in but sadly the event is already full, and there is a waiting list.
Afterwards there is a concert of Indonesian ethno-noise band Senyawa as part of Europalia Indonesia.

Next Friday, experimental concert evening at Recyclart with drones, rough guitar sounds and Pan Afrabic immigrant spheres.

***
My Cat Is An Alien is the musical brainchild of Italian brothers Maurizio and Roberto Opalio, whose sound is packed with many forms of experimentalia. Their concerts are always very unpredictable and exciting as if being shamanistic rituals. Before (1998-2012) they used mostly guitars and toy instruments to articulate thier musical idiome. At the end of last year, they suddenly changed their approach to focus on self-made snare instruments  and dissected electronic devices to give their musical universe a new sound. This new beginning has been documented on the double LP ‘Art Is A Tear Of Noise And Infinite Silence’, released on Discrepant records in october 2012. This will be their first Belgian show in this new sound.

Rough Americana is the fertile collaboration between the couple Morgan Craft and Giulia Lolli (DJ Mutamassik) and sometimes their 9 year old son Meroe. This duo plays an array of rough improvised music styles of modern times. The ‘Afro-American Viking’ Craft and the Italo-Egyptian roots of Mutamassik will supply musical influences from Memphis, Tennessee to Memphis, Egypte. Mutamassik is one of the pioneers of the Sa’aidi hardcore sound and expert in what she calls ‘Pan-Afrabic Immigrant sounds’. From her speakers she will fire afro-mediterranian hiphop as well as baladi breakbeats, brotherly next to more noisy and drone-like collages. Both worked with musical personalities such as Marc Ribot, Butch Morris, Ikue Mori, Hamid Drake and Kaffe Matthews and take their own unique place within the contemporary musical landscape.

World Minimal Music Festival 3rd day promo mixtape by Rebel Up! on Mixcloud

Save the date!
This Friday 5 april, Rebel Up! and dutch underground music magazine Gonzo (circus) host a special evening together during the World Minimal Music Festival at the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, with a nicely filled lineup of these international live acts & dj’s > > >.

Konono No1 (RDC)
Rough sounds from the urban jungle that is Kinshasa, capital of Congo. Konono N°1 is a family band of tribal Zombo musicians and dancers, active since the 70’s and started by pater familias Mingiedi. Taken on their first dutch tour by our friends The Ex in 2003, which resulted in the live album ‘Lubuaku’ on Terp Records,  their famed ‘Congotronics‘ album on the Crammed label dropped on western audiences like a bomb with rough resonating, electrified thumpiano’s (likembes) and pulsating rhythms by percussive elements made out of scrap iron. Expect no ethnological museum session, but sweetly distorted jungletechno with minimalist transcedental melodies and tribal rhythms that will only make you move. It’s clear that Konono N°1 is a more than worthy headliner on this WMMF evening and they will make the Muziekgebouw. rumble as never before.

Frisk Frugt (DK)
is the experimental pop project by Danish wonder composer Anders Lauge Meldgaard, who after a long trip in Western African got taken by the virus of African melodies and rhythms. In his songs, he combines electronic sounds and samples with kalimba thumb piano, guitars, balafon, drums en saxophone and mashes it together with Danish folk influences, all sung in his Danish mother tongue. His album ‘Dansktoppen møder Burkina Faso i det himmelblå rum hvor solen bor, suite’ was one of the more special albums of 2012, so not to be missed. He will play as a duo, aided by a percussionist. Maximum Afro-pop music on WMMF? Let’s make it work! For those who need to be convinced, read this.

Awesome Tapes From Africa (US)
Our good friend Brian Shimkovitz has played at Rebel Up! before and we’re happy to have him on board again. Since he ever set foot in Africa  in 2006, he has been collecting thousands of music cassettes of rare and local African styles, from Algeria to Zimbabwe and putting them all online as download on his Awesome Tapes blog to share with the whole wide world. Now also a label, he focusses on re-releasing unknown African music for new audiences. Expect a swinging dj session of African cassettes with dance tunes of folk and pop that you probably have never heard before, the lo-fi hiss of the cassette never far away.

High Wolf (FR)
Not just your average drone-act. This Frenchman is inspired by free jazz and Indian and African sounds and is a true globetrotter who mixes musical influences of his many trips into a myriad of sound. Don’t be surprised if you hear an African guitar or a tabla drum sound through the mist of repetitive, hypnotic drones that will bring your mind into another world.

Rebel Up! dj’s
At various moments of the evening, we will play theme sets of varied worldwide selections of ethnographical minimalistic sounds at the beginning up to contemporary global dance sounds at the end of the night. Check our downloadable WMMF mixtape above for a good taste of what you might hear…..

Sat. 26 Jan > Rebel Up! Sebcat dj set @ Int. Film Festival Rotterdam – eclectic Mind The Gap night in WORM w/ Marcus Fjellström (SE), Felix Kubin (DE), Deadbeat (CA) & Lowriders crew (NL)

hello folks,

this saturday in the heart of Rotterdam, Rebel Up! Sebcat will be playing during the musical programme of the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Dutch underground music magazine Gonzo (circus) is curating the night under the eclectic *Mind the Gap* theme and with a fine line-up of international artists;

Marcus Fjellström
Is a Swedish composer who plays neo-classical electronica and dark ambient for labels such as Miasmah. He also makes special animation movies about the cartoonish characters Odboy & Erordog and will perform these clips with his sounds.

Felix Kubin & Martha Colburn
The sound of this peculiar fella from the Hamburg underground always amazes and he always operates outside the boundaries of genres; from weird go go pop to super crazy electro fun, anything goes! Martha Colburn will join him with her strong visuals that intertwine heavy social issue, such as bloodthirsty dictators, paranoid crystal meth junkies, corrupt police and whatnot. Kubin & Colburn already worked together on the clip Big Bug Attack -below- This new set surely will be ‘aussergewöhnlich’.

Big Bug Attack- Music by Felix Kubin from Martha Colburn on Vimeo.

Deadbeat
is the moniker of Scott Monteith, a Canadian-but-living-in-Berlin, the best place for someone who makes one of the best deep dub-techno at the moment. Deadbeat’s pulsating sound is right at home in Rotterdam true the gritty industrial and architecture-scaped feel of the city. Artist and geography seldom form such a unity as it will be on this night. Slowdancing is on!

Lowriders crew
These R’dam homeboys will close off the night with a heavy stew of dubby spheres of all things grime, step, trap and tech to make you move.

various Gonzo (circus) dj’s will play eclectic sounds in the bar downstairs, for all your listening or dancing pleasure.

Rebel Up! Sebcat is playing upstairs in the big room as part of the Gonzo (circus) crew and will play eclectic warmup sets inbetween the artists and some finetuned Rebel Up! global dance n bass sounds from the tropics and urban spheres later into the night.

Should be great night indeed, hope to see you there!

Thu 10 jan; Dakhabrakha at Paradiso, A’dam; 3 x 2 tickets giveaway competition!

Thursday 10 january, crazy Ukranain electro-folk outfit DakhaBrakha are touring around the EU and coming to A’dam to play in the Paradiso in collaboration with Gonzo (circus) music magazine.

DhakhaBrakha’s sound is quite perculiar; they mix local Ukranian folk spheres and orally transmitted cultural songs together with African percussion, as well as Arabic, Bulgarian & Hungarian influences. They describe their music as psycho-folk-hiphop-trance-acoustic-triphop-ethno-chaos. Right so, we can dig that! Afterwards the eclectic Gonzo (circus) dj’s will spin records for a dance or two.

Paradiso is giving us 3 x 2 tickets to giveaway to three lucky Rebel Up! fans, so if you like to be there this evening with a friend, just mail to rebeluppa_at_gmail_dot_com and cross your fingers 🙂
We’ll notify the winners by wednesday evening.

Also keep in touch with us through our Rebel Up! facebook page.

See you around!
