Friday 23 Nov > Rebel Up @ concert night in BRASS w/ Los Orioles + Spiritczualic Enhancement Center, Bxl

Concert night on friday in BRASS cultural centre in Forest.
2 bands on the programme and 2 dj’s!

Los Orioles (CH)
Like a gang roaming the world, the seven Swiss musicians of Los Orioles seem to have used wherever they went: the cumbia in Colombia, the dub in Jamaica, the rhythms and the guitars of West Africa, but also the most alternative whimsical francophone songs (we think of the Brigitte Fontaine / Areski Belkacem duo). Sung, rapped or declaimed lyrics that wander in an endless reverb amidst a precious selection of grooves from around the world.

Spiritczualic Enhancement Center (DE/IS)

In their physical form, their existence lasted only two weeks, confined in an abandoned Ottoman building, at the foot of the walls of ancient Jerusalem. Today in exile, the Spiritczualic Enhancement Center is a free-beat resonance field, an evolving and eclectic set of different cities and countries – they prefer the term ‘international’.
In concert, four to ten musicians play a strange and ritual instrumental music, based on spontaneity and improvisation. After a series of concerts at the Fusion Festival (Germany), Outernational Days (Bucharest) and at the New Hamburg Festival, as well as in various concert venues in Europe, they have just announced three upcoming releases: ‘Transporting Salt’ on the American label Crash Symbols; ‘Who Corrupted Our Wave, Back in 1969?’ on the post-Babylonian label Kinship; and a vinyl, ‘Me and My Students Have Reached Higher Levels’ on the Paris label Akuphone, scheduled for early 2019.

Womex 2014 Santiago de Compostela aftermath

 Last friday our nightly Rebel Up! dj showcase set at Womex went quite well, such fun we had 🙂

Before this in the afternoon, we had an amazing multi dj session at the Wapapura solar disco as part of the Global Club Music network that we are part of, with dj’s such as Kosta Kostov, Boris Viande, Sauvage FM, Darius Darek, Sound Culture, Esta Polyesta, Criolina, Dala Dala, Miriam Kokako music, Evviva Show and even a special guest performance of Carmen (Gato Preto!!) . The whole 2 hour set got recorded, check it out here! (Rebel Up! SebCat at 22 mins)

then our showcase in Sala Capitol. So nice to see all the true party folks staying n dancing until the very end of our rough world hopping set. Near the end we did a special improvisation with our Canadian friends Tamar (vocals) & Briga (on violin) who improvised on our balkan tallava beats.  We will soon upload the mix and some clips of our set. Fri 19 Apr; Rebel Up! dj’s @ Balkan Trafik festival, Brussels

hey all,

Fun last minute flash;
On Friday evening we are unexpectedly playing at the Balkan Trafik festival in Bozar. We’ll be dj-ing our special old 1920’s-1950’s Rembetiko vinyls in the open Vino Zirkus area -where all the fine balkan wines can be tasted- in different time slots of 30 mins each (from 19.00-19.30/ 0:00-0:30/2:00-2:30). But also we’ll spin some rembetika during one or two moments during the performances of Greek dance group Fanouris Trikilis Band, to see some true rembetika dancing. Besides Rembetiko, for sure expect some Zeibekiko, Smirneika, Mortika, Demotika sounds in our set too…

Enough good stuff to see on Friday, check the programme; Rembetiko café, Guta Family, Fanfare Ciocarlia, Aka Balkan Moon, Klezmic Zirkus, Martin Lubenov, Thoma Loli & Aleks Micka and much more….
