10-14 June: Rebel Up @ Outernational Friend:Ship tour in Berlin & Hamburg

4 day tour in Germany: with 3 gigs in Berlin & Hamburg with Praed, Spiritzcualic Enhancement Center, Alexa D!Saster and more guests!

PRAED
Founded by Raed Yassin and Paed Conca in 2006, “Praed” is a band whose musical oeuvre can be described as a mixture of Arabic popular music, free jazz, and electronics.
In the same year, the band made its first public appearance in Al Maslakh festival in Switzerland, immediately followed by a concert at the Irtijal festival in Beirut. Since then, the band has frequented numerous international music festivals and toured intensively world-wide, spanning Japan, Europe and Canada. Through these endeavors, the band has created a large global network with other renowned musicians as musical collaborators.

The duo’s body of work mainly explores the terrain of Arabic popular music (“Shaabi”) and its interconnectedness with other psychedelic and hypnotic musical genres in the world, such as free jazz, space jazz, and psychedelic rock among others. Since its inception, Praed has shown a very keen interest in this music as a medium that reflects Egyptian society’s complicated fabric. Through the research it conducted, the band began to discover a strong cultural connection between “Shaabi” sounds and the “Mouled” music is played in religious trance ceremonies. The hypnotizing psychedelic effect that was embedded in this genre also triggered thoughts around its similarity to other popular music in the world that employ forms of sonic delirium, such as free jazz and psychedelic rock.

Spiritczualic Enhancement Center
Like an infinite circle whose center is everywhere and circumference is nowhere, the Spiritczualic Enhancement Center is an outer-national musical caravan, meandering in a world of free-beat. Their eclectic ingredients create an alchemical soup ranging from jazz-infused atavistic-futurism to frequency meditation. Featuring original artworks exploring the realms of syncretism, environments are brought to life via live-drawing projections and spaces transformed into temples of spontaneity. Creating soundscapes that glimpse into synchronistic magic, the bizarre participants of this ensemble remain agnostic: are they magicians, or merely tricksters? The band was founded on Christmas 2017, by secretly transforming the backroom of an abandoned Ottoman building adjacent to the Old City of Jerusalem into a temporary musical space.

Within the two weeks of its existence, the Center morphed into an ever-evolving and collaborative idea. Like a caravan which collects participants as it travels, a growing group of ‘outernational’ musicians are being magnetized. Carrying the Spiritczualic Enhancement Center within themselves, they gather on occasion for recording and performing. Free beat.

Rebel Up Soundclash x Akuphone label night, with live sets by Amsterdam duo dahaW ⅃ꓘ and French duo Ko Shin Moon.

Imagine an outernational sound that defies borders, the meeting of ethnic folk music in underground spheres. Sound from the past brought alive into the present via the frequencies and vibrations of strings, percussion and analogue synths. The cultural counterculture against the right wing tendencies and normalities of today will not be silenced. We want you to be part of this, join our ritual as we dance the night away to beautiful songs and hidden gems from around the world.

Earlier in the day we will play a live session at Red Light Radio from 17-18h.
stream us here > http://redlightradio.net

 dahaW ⅃ꓘ (GR/SYR) *live*
Somewhere was the beginning/Somehow will be the end/Everything is chaos/All is ONE “KL wahad” (Oud/folk guitar). In their first ever concert, they will explore the possibilities of the endless improvisation between borders and freedom.

Ko Shin Moon (FR) *live*
Paris duo Axel Moon and Niko Shin blur temporal and geographical boundaries. As Ko Shin Moon they mix acoustic instruments from different regions of the world though analogue machines, traditional instruments, electronic sampling and field recordings, taking the stage with a Saz and heaps of analogic synths. The first album of the band is a bodily trip through hybrid territories, fantasy soundscapes and colorful collages: from Oriental Europe to Northern Africa, Middle East or Southeast Asia and beyond. Reversing analogical listening in digital synthesis, as music for imaginary traveling in dancefloor trance. After numerous summer festivals allover Europe and Morocco, they have just returned from a residency in Caïro, Egypt and played at Trans Musicales Rennes Festival.

DJ Cheb Gero (Akuphone label / FR)
Genuine music lover and chronic collector, Cheb Gero has cleared up and digged into musical worlds ever since his teens. In 2015, He launched outernational label Akuphone in an “archiving” spirit, drawn by a desire to “explore the world through music”. Far from supporting a romantic or fetishist vision of extra-Western music, the label aims at linking these productions to their historical and political contexts, placing them back in the social and cultural conditions in which they emerged. He hosts the radio shows Decolonize Ur Mind and Radio Gero, as well as Parisian Northern African music nights such as Belleville Habibi. Check out his live cassette mix >

Thu 8 Feb > Rebel Up Soundclash @ OCCII Amsterdam w/ UMEME + Nyege Nyege Tapes: Sisso Sounds (TZ)

Yo Amsterdam, this thursday, a special Rebel Up Soundclash night in OCCII with Nyege Nyege Tapes label & UMEME.

Since 2010, Rebel Up has been promoting nights with sounds from the global underground at OCCII and continues to do so with international lineups.

Nyege Nyege Tapes is a label based in Kampala, Uganda,
exploring, producing and releasing contemporary electronic & outsider music from central & eastern Africa. In February they will tour with Tanzanian duo Sisso Sounds, who are playing a showcase at the Berlin CTM festival and afterwards to NL & BE. This will be their only show in NL!

Sisso Sounds *live set* (Tanzania / Nyege Nyege)
For the past 15 years the Tanzanian megalopolis of Dar Es Salaam has had one of the most exciting underground electronic music scenes in East Africa. A constellation of micro-scenes from Mchiriku, Sebene and Segere all the way to its latest mutation of Singeli that after years of lurking in the underground finally has exploded into the mainstream and taken over Bongo Flava as the music of choice amongst Tanzania’s youth. Born in the sprawling working class neighborhoods of Tandale and Manzese, Singeli’s signature sound consists of fast paced frantic loops interlocking with each other, with influences from Zanzibars Tarab music all the way to South African afro-house coupled with mc’s who often spit satirical lyrics about the challenges facing Tanzania’s youth, from police corruption to the complications of dating girls when you are broke. If there is one studio that stands out amongst the hundreds that dot Dar es Salaam’s musical landscape it is SISSO RECORDS. Sisso have remained uncompromising in their sound, always raw, fast with a punk DIY aesthetic that can at times verge on noise and gabber, to produce a spell binding music that is like no other soundsystem culture in the region. Expect a live set dancehall horns, sirens and heavy MC rapping. For lovers of ravey Afro sounds, balani, shangaan and gqom.
https://nyegenyegetapes.bandcamp.com/album/sounds-of-sisso

UMEME *live set* (Amsterdam)
Live house/techno with African influences. UMEME was founded by Daniele Labbate (synths and bass) and Bas Bouma (drums), two friends and experienced musicians who found themselves falling in love with live electronic and traditional African music. Over the course of countless nocturnal jam sessions, the two found a striking way to fuse these two extremes, with subtle electro, house and techno accents. Yannick van ter Beek (percussion) adds the afro to the rave with his African rhythms as third member of UMEME. Umeme latest ep “Athnan” reflects the focus of Labbate and Bouma on producing a crossover between North African rhythms, analog synths and drummachines. While the previous album “Afrorave” was a dark and flashy mix of different styles and rhythms coming from of Togo, Ghana, Ethiopia “Athnan” instead concentrates exclusively on Maghreb and Sharqi music originally from Morocco, Algeria and Egypt.

Moroto Hvy Indstr (Nyege Nyege DJ)
Head DJ of the Nyege Nyege label and resident at Boutiq Electroniq Sound System, Moroto plays some deep grooves and slamming African bass-tech-house mutations.
