tonight, wedn 21 March > Danyel Waro @ Muziekpublique< xl with Rebel Up & Drache Musicale afterparty!!

this wednesday we have the honour of having the great Maloya master & cultural activist Danyèl Waro,  his only show in Belgium.

In the middle of the Indian Ocean lies the island of La Réunion, a French overseas territory where the Maloya music lives. The origins of this strongly percussive dance music goes back to the singing and dancing of slaves, who worked on sugar cane plantations. Blended with Malagasy and Indian music, Maloya arose, the blues of La Réunion. The ambassador of this trance-enlivening music is Danyèl Waro, an extremely enthusiastic and striking musician, poet and rebel, who absorbs it for the oppressed and socially weak. With his powerful, high voice, this descendant of French colonialists in Creole sings about love and death, but also current issues, racism and the dominant French culture.

Until the beginning of the 1980s, Maloya was banned because of ties with the independence movement and the communist party, but thanks to Waro, Maloya is now heard worldwide and is on the UNESCO list of intangible heritage. He was once in prison for conscientious objectors and enjoys hero status on La Réunion.

Afterparty in the foyer with Rebel Up & Drache Musicale!
After a trip through La Reunion, the Drache Musicale duo made 2 mixtapes last year for the NGHE Mediatheque cassette label, based on collected 7 “from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Together with Rebel Up SebCat they will play an afterparty set based on vinyls from La Reunion, Mauritius and the Seychelles and take you to the world of maloya and sega.

Tickets are sadly sold out since a few days, hope you got one on time!
