rebelup_22nov_poster_smallYo folks,

our next Rebel Up! Soundclash party has a Latin-American flavor, with special guests from Argentina & Chile! You know what that means! Cumbia, cumbiaton, reggaeton, merengue, dembow, tribal, global bass, andean folklore, narco electronics & twerk folk! In short; not to be missed 🙂

with special guests >
Chancha Via Circuito
One of the foremost exponents of Argentina’s digital cumbia scene, Pedro Canale aka Chancha Via Circuito has released 2 albums on Buenos Aires’ famed ZZK label and just released his 3rd album Amanasara on Brussels label Crammed Discs. Their blend of Argentinian folklore, Paraguayan harp and Andean mysticism, all processed through Pedro Canale’s own futuristic strain of electronic music, has garnered great reactions: the albums were hailed by Pitchfork and the New York Times, among others, and Chancha was enlisted for remix work by Gilles Peterson and Gotan Project. Expect a set of dubby cumbia and minimal electronic folk spheres straight from the Andes!

Pedrolito is his sidekick at Muevelo and runs a saboroso radio show for Groovalizacion radio. Expect a heavy suave mix of villera street cumbia, tropical bass and dancehall.

Fri 16 May Rebel Up! Sebcat @ Pantropical party, WORM R’dam with Yan Koy & Color Rumba (RDC/BE)

color rumba 16mei

This coming friday 16 May, Pantropical organises a super special Congolese night in Worm are totally psyched to finally be able to host a rare LIVE show by Color Rumba! They are masters at playing classic Congolese rumba soukous from the sixties to the eighties; super infectious and dancable music! Some of their bandmembers performed with famous Congolese bands such as Franco’s Orchestre T.P.O.K. Jazz, Zaiko Langa Langa and Demba. Don’t miss out on this one!

+++++++++++++++++++

• Yan Koy & COLOR RUMBA (RDC/BE)
This band’s mastery of the Congolese soukous from the 1960s to 1980s will bring you to dance! Rumba is a genre of dance music that originated from Cuban Rumba in the Belgian and French Congo during the 1940s and later garnered popularity throughout Africa, followed by the Soukous style with a more modern upbeat sound from the late 70’s onwards. Led by singer Yan Koy, Color Rumba is a band with a revolving cast of members such as luminaries Petit Poisson (guitar), Pappy Muntu (bass), Alonzo Baba (drums) and others who played in famous Congolese bands like Franco’s TPOK Jazz and Zaiko Langa Langa. In their two hour live set, Color Rumba will take you to the Congolese nirvana of tropical rock with beautifully cascading, sparkling guitar melodies, a super tight and hypnotic rhythm section and polyphonic vocals. Absolutely essential!

• ALEX FIGUEIRA (VE – Vintage Voudou, Music with Soul)
Venezolan/Portugese Alex Figueira is a pleasantly obsessed vinyl junkie, label man, musician and dj. He is a true music specialist on afro-venezuelan culture and runs the Vintage Voudou vinyl shop in the midst of Amsterdam’s red light district; a treasure trove of obscure 2nd hand tropical gems. Alex also puts out 45’s on his label Music With Soul and plays in the bands Papa Upa and Fumaça Preta. At Pantropical, Alex will spin the dopest African and Caribbean music. Raw but dancable stuff, vinyl only!

• SEBCAT (BE – Rebel Up!)
This boss man selector operates from Bruxelles; unearthing, filtering and mixing the best diasporic & rougher sounds from the global underground. He’s the motor behind many great party and concert nights in wellknown clubs like the Recyclart and Bonnefooi. Sebcat also writes for Gonzo magazine and recently honoured the seminal Sublime Frequencies label with the ‘Rajasthan Street Music’ 2lp compilation.

• LA PANTHЀRE NOIRE (CIV/NL)
Upbeat local kid Dani who once twiddled knobs and rearranged cable salads at Worm as part of the technical team. Using the same moniker for his paintings, he will do the buildup of this night, with a mix of soukous and afrohouse. More of the latter.

aj holmes
East London musician A.J.Holmes is the founding member & singer of The Hackney Empire band, who play a marriage of afro-pop and soukous paired with traditional pop sensibilities as a serious warm vibe. Rogie (the king of palm wine guitar music) and from that moment on he got totally sucked into African music which also resulted into co-organising the succesfull Secousse club nights of tropical madness in London together with global electronic duo Radioclit (M.I.A., The Very Best, Amadou & Mariam). On this night he will play a solo palm wine guitar set as warmup, followed by a super special set with guitar & dj decks at the same time for a unique approach of his mixed African sound. We can only say; not to be missed! Listen to his mixtape & songs of what to expect.

live show by Greek duo The Kazatzikis. Rebetika is the Greek blues from the 20’s and 30’s of last century, sung by Greek immigrants that were kicked out of Asia Minor and Turkey during the wars. Rebetika songs are all about the hard life of an immigrant in the harbours and ghettos of Thessaloniki and Athens, with heavy and dark lyrics that touch drugs, poverty, love drama’s and prostitution. The Kazatzikis will play these old sounds to bring us back to the times of immigrant woes and economic crisis, perhaps a familiar parallel to the present times. Sat. 20 Apr; Rebel Up! Soundclash Sufi/Electro Chaabi night w/ Ali Kawa Brothers & Qawwali Party (IN) + Cairo Liberation Front

rebelup_2013 04 20 web

After last week’s amazing night with Konono No1, a fresh Soundclash night coming up @ OCCII again! It will be a special eastern/arabic theme night with mystical Sufi/Qawwali music from India, revolution electro Shabi sounds, dabke from the middle east and much much more!!!!

Ali Kawa Brothers & Qawwali Party (IN)
trancedental Sufi & Qawwali music by muscians from Rajasthan, near to the border with Pakistan. Their special sound is filled with mystical spheres and islamic healing power that takes your mind and body to a distant place. Expect some deep resonating vocals, strong tabla rhythms and hypnotic vibes. They will play around midnight, so don’t come late!

CaĂŻro Liberation Front
something is brewing in the rougher neighbourhoods of CaĂŻro; young producers are making new electronic music called electro shabi (or sha3i), a rough sound that combines dancehall influences with Egyptian techno folk with a heavy political undercurrent. CLF has collected the best dance tunes of all these new producers, so this calls for a revolution party, YALLA!
https://soundcloud.com/cairoliberationfront

We are also joined by our buddy Process Rebel (US) who will play his dancehall selections with an eastern-arabic vibe.

As always, the Rebel Up! dj’s will fill the gaps with their own blend of global sounds, in this case only pure asian n arabic sounds from vintage and modern times.
