New release: ‘Free The System’ single EP by Dandana

Free The System!’ is the new single EP by the band Dandana, to be released on Friday 19 June on Rebel Up Records. Including an ancestral afrofuturist remix by Afro-Dutch producer Philou Louzolo.

‘Free The System!’ is about the gap between the older generation and the younger generation. The old system can’t easily deal with young or new idea’s. The current global pandemic and Black Lives Matter movement clearly show us that the system needs to be changed, we have to free ourselves from it.

The videoclip premiered on Pan African Music blog (see article)
check here:

and also international UK blog The Ransom Note did an article about the remix by Afro Dutch producer Philou Louzolo and the videoclip. see here >

DANDANA is a collective band of musicians from the Netherlands, Senegal and The Gambia with members Bas Ackermann, Ebou Gaye Mada, Filly Dioma, Jackson Loman, Joop de Graaf and Modou Joof. Together they chose to let go of the past and take a new musical path. Their sound pays tribute to traditional West African rhythm & grooves, with instruments from Senegal and The Gambia such as sabar, xalam and balafon with live drums, electronic drum pads and a range of vintage synthesizers. Inspired by West African psychedelic mandingue pioneers Guelewar, Ifang Bondi & Touré Kunda to the synth-driven vibes of bands like Air & Tame Impala. “Free the System” will take you on a journey through a new universe.

Wedn 11.03: new on Rebel Up Records Cheb Runner – Tagnawit EP + release show @ Botanique w/ Cheb Runner & Ozferti live band

Cheb Runner – Tagnawit EP (RUP015)
spiritual Gnawa meets Electronic music, limited vinyl edition!
official release on 11 March
digital & limited editon vinyl (black/colour)

The latest project by belgo-moroccan producer Reda Senhaji, alias Cheb Runner, focuses on breeding a new style of music between electronics and Gnawa. Taking inspiration from New Beat to Techno, Acid House and Gabber, the grooves are relentless, stiff and club oriented, relying heavily on analog synths and drum-machines. The sound is darker, more experimental and mature than his previous Gan Gah project.

In a world of dematerialized culture, we tend to forget where we come from: by putting Gnawa music at the center of his production, Cheb Runner creates a bridge with the past. The young producer is a son of Gnawa himself, this is the music he grew up with and played as a kid.

Cheb Runner digs into the acoustic sounds of his youth, for an organic feeling of warmth and celebration. The syncopation of the classic Gnawa percussions, known as the “Tagnawit”, its groove is undeniable. Featuring two traditional Gnawa singers based in Brussels, Mâalem Driss and Mâalem Hicham, the EP is a reunion for the belgian Gnawa scene, keeping the vibe alive.

Available as limited edition 12″ vinyl with hand silk screened cover > black or marbled red. Listen & (pre)order via Bandcamp.
