Molenbeek! A cultural and artistic melting pot, a young and dynamic neighborhood filled with action and movement. CafƩ Quartier is a meeting place where a stage is presented to (young) talent, ideas and initiatives.
CafƩ Quartier XXL is a new concept: an expansion of the profile of the VK. Its main idea is to offer a true cross-over, in music, on stage and in the crowd. The bands on the stage will provide a mix between underground and Maghrebi music and will offer an experience which represents the spirit of Molenbeek!

Hailing from Mali the Tuareg band Terakaft (meaning “The Caravan”) are regarded as the pioneers of desert rock. No other band from the desert is closer to Tinariwen than Terakaft.
‘Alone’ is the fifth album of Terakaft. Recorded partly at the famous Real World Studios, the album was produced by Justin Adams, the British musician/ producer who has delved deep into Tuareg music, and is known through his work with Robert Plant, Tinariwen and Juldeh Camara. In these troubled times, they have made an album together, that presents the deep Saharan rhythms as a vital contemporary heartbeat. Standing on the ruins of their people’s dreams they sing to their brothers and sisters about true friendship and tolerance.

In the somewhat crowded scene of Tuareg guitarists, Mdou stands apart from his peers. One of the few original singer/songwriters willing to experiment and push the boundaries of the genre, his unconventional styles have won him accolades both in Niger and abroad. Mdou Moctar hails from Abalak, in the Azawagh desert of Niger.
In 2013, he released his first international album, āAfelaneā, rocking and raw sessions recorded live at his hometown in Niger and earlier this year his fictional biography movie “Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai”, an amazing rockfilm in the Tamasheq language.

Mdou MoctarĀ – concert
In the somewhat crowded scene of Tuareg guitarists, Mdou stands apart from his peers. One of the few original singer/songwriters willing to experiment and push the boundaries of the genre, his unconventional styles have won him accolades both in Niger and abroad.
Mdou Moctar hails from Abalak, in the Azawagh desert of Niger. He taught himself the guitar at a young age on a homemade instrument. Inspired by returning Ishumar, Mdou traveled the road to Libya where he traveled and worked odd jobs. As chance had, he would meet some of the now famous guitarists and further his musical studies. He returned home with a guitar and a dream.
Rising to the status as local celebrity, in 2008 he traveled to Nigeria to record his first album āAnarā ā a psychedelic electronic album of Tuareg guitar, became an instant success throughout the mp3 networks of West Africa. āTahoultine,ā one of the standout tracks, was later featured on the compilation āMusic from Saharan Cellphones.ā In 2013, he released his first international album, āAfelane,ā rocking and raw sessions recorded live at his hometown in Niger. He is currently in production in the first ever Tuareg language film, a fictional story of the struggle of a guitarist trying to make it against all odds in Agadez.

Prince goes Sahel in this colorful homage to Purple Rain. Set among the sub-Saharan Tuareg people, and reputedly the first feature film in their Tamashek language (which has no word for āpurple,ā hence the title). Resplendent in a purple robe and matching chopper, smoking hot guitarist Mdou Moctar arrives in a music-mad Niger town and sets about wooing a local beauty, clashing with his pious father, and fencing with the jealous king of the local scene (Kader Tanoutanoute, as wily and dapper as Morris Day) until their climactic six-string shootout.
Starring guitarist Mdou Moctar, Rain the Color of Blue with a Little Red in It (Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai) is a feature length fiction film, shot entirely in Agadez, Niger. Akounak tells the universal story of a musician trying to make it āagainst all odds,ā set against the backdrop of the raucous subculture of Tuareg guitar. The protagonist, real life musician Mdou Moctar, must battle fierce competition from jealous musicians, overcome family conflicts, and endure the trials of love ā all while coming to terms with one of the biggest barriers: himself.
Both a homage to Purple Rain and The Harder They Come, Akounak is based on the universal hero, the struggle of a musician to overcome a series of conflicts. In execution, many techniques have been adapted from Poverty Row, Italian Neo-Realism, and the experimental films of Jean Rouch. While there are a plethora of films concerning the Tuareg guitar, all are documentaries. Akounak is the first fiction film to explore the scene in this format, and the first film in the Tuareg language of Niger.

Our very first radio show session, “emission 0” on Radio Campus Bxl, broadcasted on 11th of january and to be repeated several times during the month. The show was actually recorded in late august and we had to wait a while before it was accepted into the Campus programme schedule. We kick off with 2 songs, followed by a label focus about the Sahel Sounds label that mostly releases current folk & electronic music from the sub Saharan region. Then we played our albums of the month, which were Hailu Mergia (on Awesome Tapes From Africa) and Grand KallĆ© & l’Orchestre Jazz (on Planet Ilunga), followed by a global style focus on Pandza music from the south of Mozambique, a new electronic Marrabenta Shangaan style. In the nightshop segment we interview local Afghani shop owner Raza Wasiq of the Economat shop on Av Stalingrad and he chooses 2 ‘Hazzari’ songs to play. Sahel Sounds
Is a more than special label of field and studio recordings of tradional and modern popular music straight from the African Sahel, headed by American musicologist Christoper Kirkley. It all started as a cultblog named *Music From Saharan Cell Phones* where local folk and pop music was collected on sim cards and USB sticks, which is the main source of hand-to-ear music distribution in the Sub Saharan region. Since then the Sahel Sounds project has unfolded as a label that has steadily been releasing unknown artistis and bands from the Sahel region with a website that goes far beyond any typical label with road trip stories, free musical uploads and background info. Christopher Kirkley will play a dj set with selections from his own label and other special finds.

Mammane Sani Abdullaye is a legendary name amongst Nigerās avant garde. A pioneer of early West African electronic music, for over 30 years his instrumentals have filled the airwaves. The instrumental background drones of radio broadcasts and instrumental segue ways of TV intermissions borrow heavily from his repertoire. The dreamy organ instrumentals drift by sans comment, yet are known to all. Mammane first found the organ in 1974 as at the time he worked as a UN representative in Africa and bought it from a Rwandese colleague. Mammaneās composes in technique that can only be called minimal, relying on the simplicity and space. It is a remarkable manipulation of sound that uses the silence to invoke the emptiness ā a metaphoric desert soundscape. Unsurprisingly, his source material is folkloric Nigerien music, and many of the compositions on this record are reproductions of ancient songs brought into the modern age. Interpreting this rich and varied history of Nigerās dance and song for the first time in contemporary musics, Mammane electrifies the nomadic drum of the tende, the polyphonic ballads of the Woddaabe, and the pastoral hymns of the Sahelian herders. Accompany this repertoire are a few compositions, such as Salamatu, the deeply personal love letter to an unrequited romance. His sound can very much be compared to the contemporary works of fellow African composers Francis Bebey and William Onyeabor, and on a western level Terry Riley and Kraftwerk are never far away.
His first and only album was recorded in 1978. Mammane stepped into the studio of the National Radio with his organ, where it was transposed and overdubbed in two takes. In coordination with the Minister of Culture, the album was released in a limited series of cassettes showcasing modern Niger music. The cassette project unfortunately did not progress as planned, and merely a handful were released. Today his cassettes are rare objects, highly sought by fine art connoisseurs and experimental music collectors in Niamey.

This saturday all day > Moussem Sounds: twelve hours of non-stop modern Maghreb/Arabic music on three stages in BOZAR.
The Moussem Nomadic Arts Centre has always taken a keen interest in alternative, excellent music from all over the world. We keep up with the latest developments and invite new young bands which emerge in our cities as well as in other countries. Whatever is simmering in the world sooner or later finds its ways to the stage, in innovative sounds and moving texts.
Moussem Sounds is a special mix of rock, hip hop, jazz, electro, blues, oriental and funk. Moussem Sounds is music full of cross-overs from France, Morocco, Greece, Algeria, Belgium, Jordan or Egypt.
We’ll be playing short Rebel Up! sets in the Foyer next to Henry le Boeuf hall, from 15:00 ā 15:30, 16:30-17:00, 18:00-18:30 and 19:30-20:00, expect a wild variety of Maghreb and Middle Eastern sounds.

Andalus, a group of musicians from the Iraqi diaspora in Europe, takes you on a poetic musical journey through maqams and traditional and festive music from Iraq.
5 pm Hijaz
The Tunisian master of the oud Moufadhel Adhoum and the Greek-Belgian pianist Niko Deman discovered they shared a passion for improvisation and music with Mediterranean influences. Hijaz is an instrumental dialogue between East and West. Jazz, for these multifaceted musicians, is far more than just a genre: it means a free approach to diverse musical worlds, whatever their origins.
6.30 pm El Morabba3
El Morabba3 translates the bustle of Amman into pure rock. The group sings about the frustrations of life in the big city and about the hopelessness of the world around them, but also about their own determination to change things.
8 pm Imarhan NāTinezraf
The spiritual and artistic roots of this young group of Tuareg musicians lie in the most arid, rocky area of the Sahara, in the endless plains the Tuaregs call Tinezraf. Their music expresses what it means to be a Tuareg today in poetic compositions that take you by the throat right from the first bars.

The Al Boughaz ensemble is a group of Belgian-Arab musicians brought together specially for the occasion. Together with the talented singer Samia Sabri, they present a tribute to “the Rose of Algeria”, Warda El DjazaĆÆria, who died in 2012.

The Moroccan superstar Houda Saad was made famous by the Arabic version of the X-Factor TV programme. Her first album, released in 2008, contains songs sung in the dialects of Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon, and the Gulf states. At the Centre for Fine Arts, as part of Moussem Sounds, she will present her second album and a selection of the best of modern Moroccan chanson.

The versatile musical all-rounder Smadj brings his latest project, Fuck the DJ, to Moussem Sounds. He takes an ironic look at DJs, who so often take the place of live musicians wherever people dance all over the world. Smadj shows us a different way of doing things as he immerses us in his musical world, from Balkan disco to hip hop and from minimal techno to Middle Eastern dubstep. Welcome to the baroque electro world of Smadj!

No More Bullshit. Four young rappers, born and bred in the Kiel district of Antwerp. Youngsters who have become wildly popular in their own neighbourhood through their hip hop in a mixture of Antwerp dialect, English, French, and Arabic to world-class beats – with lyrics that mean something.
10.30 pm H-Kayne
Six years ago, H-Kayne gave Moroccan hip hop a shot in the arm. The group is made up of four young guys from MeknĆØs who grew up with the music of Biggie and Tupac, before developing their own style. They combine Western beats with traditional Moroccan instruments and melodies; their lyrics often deal with corruption and individual freedom.

Abdelkarim Brahmi-Benalla, better known as Rim’K, is a French-Algerian rapper who grew up in the banlieue of Vitry-sur-Seine and became known as a member of the rap groups 113 and Mafia K’1 Fry. He has shared a stage with Khaled, Mobb Deep, Sefyu, and Rohff.

Uman is an integral part of the history of Belgian hip hop. A radio entertainment pioneer with a specialization in rap and student of the Saint-Luc art school in Brussels, he quickly joined the Brussels-based trio De Puta Madre, which he left in 1992. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, Uman founded the Bass Sound System Culture and perpetuated the spirit of Jamaican dancehall through incendiary performances in clubs, concerts and festivals accross the realm.
