New release: ‘Free The System’ single EP by Dandana

Free The System!’ is the new single EP by the band Dandana, to be released on Friday 19 June on Rebel Up Records. Including an ancestral afrofuturist remix by Afro-Dutch producer Philou Louzolo.

‘Free The System!’ is about the gap between the older generation and the younger generation. The old system can’t easily deal with young or new idea’s. The current global pandemic and Black Lives Matter movement clearly show us that the system needs to be changed, we have to free ourselves from it.

The videoclip premiered on Pan African Music blog (see article)

and also international UK blog The Ransom Note did an article about the remix by Afro Dutch producer Philou Louzolo and the videoclip. see here >

DANDANA is a collective band of musicians from the Netherlands, Senegal and The Gambia with members Bas Ackermann, Ebou Gaye Mada, Filly Dioma, Jackson Loman, Joop de Graaf and Modou Joof. Together they chose to let go of the past and take a new musical path. Their sound pays tribute to traditional West African rhythm & grooves, with instruments from Senegal and The Gambia such as sabar, xalam and balafon with live drums, electronic drum pads and a range of vintage synthesizers. Inspired by West African psychedelic mandingue pioneers Guelewar, Ifang Bondi & Touré Kunda to the synth-driven vibes of bands like Air & Tame Impala. “Free the System” will take you on a journey through a new universe.

new Rebel Up Nightshop online (April) > #71 Quarantine show with 10 albums of the month!

This month’s Rebel Up Nightshop show (April 2020, via Radio Campus Bruxelles) is done in quarantine, home recorded as a big 2 hour mixtape with 10(!) albums of the month. Look out for some current candid COVID19 spoken word soundbites throughout the show as awareness or social political counteraction.

Starting with a psychedelic oriental tune by Baharat on Batov Records and followed by the new Ethiofunk-meets-dub album ‘Yene Mircha’ by Hailu Mergia on Awesome Tapes From Africa. After this, Argentinian outsider band Los Siquicos Literalenos and their experimental chamame folk sound out on Hive Mind Records and followed by the reissue of Peruvian Amazonian cumbia band Ranil Y Su Conjunto on Analog Africa, rare recordings from the 1970’s. We travel to Turkey via German Turkish migrant communities on the Uzelli Electro Saz compilation with psychedelic folk from 70’s & 80’s and followed by contemporary northern Greek folk music album by Evritiki Zygia on Teranga Beat label. Then we travel to Morocco, to the Master Musicians of Jajouka & Bachir Attar reissue on vinyl by Zehra label from a 1991 recording and we travel up into the Iberian peninsula for the compilation Codex Futura Vol.1 on Samain Music digital label with contemporary electronic folk music from Spain & Portugal. El Buho brings his new electronic latino album ‘Ramas’ on Wonderwheel label and we end the show in oriental electronic rave sounds via French duo Ko Shin Moon (‘Leila Nova’) on Akuphone and Palestinian duo Zenobia (‘Halak Halak’) on Crammed Discs.

Fri 30 June > Rebel Up @ Recyclart Holidays; Peruvian Night w/ Los Wemblers de Iquitos, Dengue Dengue Dengue, Shushupe & Cecilia Yzarra

This friday, heavy cumbia action at the start of Recyclart Holidays, a true Peruvian Night with almost a complete Peruvian lineup!  Tamos listo?

Chicha Amazonica & Peruvian bass!

Los Wemblers de Iquitos (PE)
The inventors of the Amazonian chicha cumbia, Los Wemblers are a group that started in the 70’s by a shoemaker/guitarist and his five sons in Iquitos, a city in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. This legendary group, especially rediscovered by Dengue Dengue Dengue, has just released a new EP in the spring and is exploring the Brussels bush. Selva-delic!

Dengue Dengue Dengue (PE)
The most psychedelic electronic duo of Lima, who behind their crazy masks and vibrant colorful visuals bring massive Peruvian electro bass! With a mix of digital future, cumbia, tropical bass, dancehall, chicha from the 70s, they are in constant motion and constantly release new sounds with influences allover. Expect a set bridging the gap between Latin America, Africa & the West. One thing is sure: they’ll fire up the Recyclart!

ShuShupe (PE)
The name of this female producer comes from one of the most venomous snakes in the Amazonian forest, makes its full sense on the dancefloor. She will inject toxic rhythms into your limbs and make the heat rise until you catch a tropical disease. Also she is part as activist of a growing LGTB scene and a woman on the forefront of the female Latin American electronic sound.

DJ’s SebCat & Cecilia Yzarra (Bxl/PE)
This Belgian & Peruvian duo will do the outdoor warmup with cumbia, chicha, boogaloo, guaracha, criolla and much more Vinyl only, with lots of vintage dusty discs. SebCat needs no introduction but Cecilia Yzarra is one of the few female dj’s from Peru, with an incredible selection of vintage vinyl.

Thu 9 Feb > Rebel Up! @ Fumaça Preta & Yôkaï, Les Ateliers Claus, Bxl

This thursday 9 Feb a special concert night @ Les Ateliers Claus.
Double concert for lovers of psychedelic tropicalia punk & afro jazz

Fumaça Preta: An psychedelic tropicalia noise fuzz rock quartet via Venezuela, Brighton (UK) and Amsterdam. A Deep throat organ over fuzzy funk drumming, then passionate ranting in Portuguese – Pupilas Dilatadas lays out its stall right from the start: a mad love for 1960s Braziian psych rock stirred up with European humour. The wild harmonized guitar chords remain unleashed till four minutes in, and the track is an impressive mix of discipline and righteous craziness. “Toda Pessoa” is even better, a concise and coolly configured mesh of bass and guitar lines strutting towards a chorus whose dumbness verges on perfection. The music shifts easily from pomp rock riffs to lounge moments, with space echo and other FX splashed generously about. Espelhos Fundidos is a casually brilliant throwaway: a high bassline, cello and bass clarinet taking turns on melody, while waves of insane laughter and echo crash over the top. This is record collection rock, if you like, but from people with very special collections. It’s amazing that the whole steaming, tropical concoction has emerged from a tiny Amsterdam studio.

Yôkaï: is pure tribal jazz. They play groovy composition in the style of Ethio master Mulatu Astatke, but also with more quiet moments where Fred Becker exchanges his sax for the ney flute. All in all a pleasant and broody afro-ethio atmosphere. For Les Ateliers Claus they will perform a special set where they” work around tribal compostions.

Thu 2 Feb @ Yallah Bye!, VK, Molenbeek Bxl

This Thursday evening, concert + dj support by Rebel Up! @ VK.

Tunisian singer-songwriter Jawhar, known for his critically acclaimed album Qibla Wa Qobla, surprises us with yet an entirely new project: hypnotic, psychedelic and avant-garde electro-chaâbi music with a twist. Yallah Bye! is a rather unlikely musical encounter between an international icon of Rom culture, Mónika « Mitsou » Miczura (Ando Drom, Bratsch, Fanfare Ciocarlia) and the oriental folk/pop musician Jawhar. Based largely on new songs that Jawhar created for Yallah Bye! as well as pieces of Mitsou’s repertoire, this new creation is so much more than a clash of cultures.
Line Up:
Jawhar Basti: banjo vocals // Mitsou: vocals // Louis Evrard: Programming // David Picard: Keys // Yannick Dupont: Bass // Sep François: Percussions
