Tirelessly hopping from continent to continent is the driving force behind the Rebel Up DJs  for this evening to stop at the rich musical traditions of India. There is more than just music in India and Bollywood spiritual ragas, so expect a mix of tough street music and alternative strident disco folk from all over India by Rebel Up! DJs.

22:00> 10:15 p.m. Documentary about the arganisation Telluris helping the people in Jharkhand.

The Belgian aid organization Telluris helps Munda tribes establish their own ecological projects in the forests of Jharkhand in north India. Because this Rebel Up! evening is free, we hope to raise money for Telluris, so do a donation in the pot at the DJ table! This short documentary was made by Maarten van der Glas, the VJ of Rebel Up!

Pictures from the street life in India (from the holy city of Pushkar, known for its camel market, fairground, street music and rituals) and taken mixed live by DJ & VJ M SebCat (Rebel Up!).This project will end this year on Sublime Frequencies as a compilation and DVD.

De Belgische hulporganisatie Telluris helpt de Mundastammen bij het opzetten van eigen ecologische projecten in de bossen van Jharkhand in Noord India. Omdat deze Rebel Up! avond gratis is, hopen we geld in te zamelen voor Telluris dus doe een donatie in de pot bij de dj tafel! Deze korte documentaire is gemaakt door Maarten van der Glas, de VJ van Rebel Up!

There’s more to Indian music than Bollywood and classical raga’s alone, so expect an alternative mix of rough street music and distorted disco folkpop from allover India by Rebel Up! dj’s SebCat & Riquetik.

About as old as Ethiopia itself, are the so called Azmaris, the wondering troubadours. A special chapter in Ethiopian culture. These playfull improvisors give a critical, humerous and poetic edge to the Ethiopian society. But also on all other matters they are the ‘freedom of speech’.

These Azmaris, from Addis Abeba, play the three most important traditional instruments: the masinqo, the one string fiddle and bow; the krar, the 6 string harp; and the kobero, the traditonal drums from big tins and cowskin.

This soulfull music from Ethiopia is unique and stands out from everything, but is at the same time very swinging, dancable and forward, like a good rockband.

This is the last Rebel Up brewing this 2010 summer! We kick it off in an appropiate setting: as the after party of the sustainable architecture day. In our beautiful vechtclub made out of clay and recycled materials it is the most fitting decor indeed.

We have our special line up of DJs waiting to serve you fresh tunes of the global underground and spice you up with special sound cocktails.

Come and shake your hip and feet and make a clash that will last all summer!

moving on to the airwaves; this Friday, Rebel Up! is invited to Brussels pirate station Radio Panik to play some tunes at the Jardin Publik/Jardin (F)estival show from 18 – 19h realtime.  You can listen live to the show on internet, check here.

We’ll play a selection of Indian folkpop tunes from our special India evening on 8th of july at the Recyclart. This night will be part of the upcoming Holidays summer festival of Recyclart, which kicks off this weekend and goes on till the end of august.
We’ll also play some other good music of artists/bands that will play at the festival. Tune in! Good tunes to go with your BBQ!

this Saturday night Rebel Up! will be spinning sounds at 2 free parties in Brussels, close to each other and by good coincidence.

Earlier in the night I’m playing latino & afrobeat sounds from 0:30 till about 2am at noche Tropical #2 in Madame Moustache. From 22:30 till 0:30 there’s even time to learn some salsa & merengue dance moves.

After 2am I’ll be playing at the famous Bal Du Canal night in La Compilotheque on the canal (Akenkaai 50), These nights are true summer parties that go on till dawn and with all kinda music possible, as long as it swings ‘n’ shakes, from kitsch to new sounds. Expect a good mix of global vibes, folkpop, fanfare funk, new wave and disco. Also here entrance is free, so don’t miss this fine party.

I’ll be bringing a donation box for Dutch-Bolivian charity organisation Chakana (www.chakana.org), so feel free to donate some loose coins at the dj booth.

After an amazing first edition early May, we’re back with that latin twist you can’t resist. A dancing introduction is also set up, so you can look good on the wooden dancefloor, moving those hips, doing fancy tricks and moves to the toughest grooves. Now that’s a formula isn’t it?

DANCE INTRO : For those who’d like to get busy on the dancefloor but don’t know the steps, a couple of excellent dancers will be there to show you the basics In the first part of the evening. Nothing too formal, straight party vibe !

REBEL UP! DJ Sebcat will be guest-DJing the oldschool sounds of the latin continent. Looking good indeed.

After having the great honour to play at a great night with The Ex and Getatchew Mekuria last Friday, this Saturday 12th june we’ll be enjoying our special guest from the Canadian countryside.

1-Speed Bike is the alter-ego of Aidan Girtdrummer for Montreal-based bands Exhaust and Godspeed You! Black Emperor & Exhaust. He’s a one man mobile soundsystem who started making his first appearance remixing tracks on an ancient 12-bit AKAI sampler for Exhaust’s debut record, Aidan went on to build a large sample bank sourced from his own live drumming and made a full-length album for Constellation in 2000. He has also moshed things up at numerous street actions and benefits over the years. Aidan lived in A’dam for a while before settling with his family into a cabin in the woods outside of Montreal, where he continues to speed things up and slow things down at his home studio.

We will also be joined by DJ TP OK who will play a fine selection northern african dance styles, afro funk, global beats and other gems.

The ever global Rebel Up! crew will serve some more hot music and vids from our global archives and newfound spheres with beats, bass and funk to your liking. Latin American – African – Caribbean – Arabian – Asian & western sounds in a heavy mishmash that will dazzle your cultured minds. Just go wild and crazy! As the World Cup kicks off, we’ll play some special South African music to honour the poor people in the townships.

Tonight we would like to raise money & awareness for charity Stichting Chakana, an organisation that provides support to Indian communities in the upper highlands of the Bolivian and Peruvian Andes. Their main projects are focussed on building greenhouses, teaching ecological agriculture and providing education for children. We will go around with the donation pot and hope you can drop a nice donation, whatever you can spare.
