Having torn up dancefloors across continents since 1995, DJ Ripley unleashes bass frequencies at revolutionary volume in town squares, warehouses, ships, clubs, squats, universities, community centers and activist spaces. Her wide-ranging sets unseat musical and social preconceptions with a mind-blowing conversation between kuduro, juke, dubstep, cumbia, booty bass, dancehall, soca, 3bal, jungle, baile funk, garage, breakcore, bhangra and dub.

As usual the Rebel Up! DJs will trigger their latest surprises and will accompany you through the night to unleash their musical encyclopedia of finest global tunes, from Angolan semba to Zanzibari taarab.

We never do it for the single reason of partying at the OCCII. The entrance fee is as usual reserved for a good cause which this time is the “Boats 4 People” project of the activist network Migreurop. As thousands of people died trying to reach Europe from North Africa in the Mediterranean Sea this summer, they are organizing a solidarity flotilla in early 2012 to raise awareness of this tragedy and denounce the criminalization of migration. “We have come to the conclusion that it is essential now to move to direct action in the light of the excessive number of shipwrecks taking place in the Mediterranean and the reluctance of Europe to concede entry to refugees. We call for a Mediterranean which is in solidarity with migrants and in opposition to repressive policies which seek to criminalise migration towards Europe more and more each day.”

The music video/dvd/clip is currently thé most versatile medium in Africa, Asia and South America to spread music and culture. The growing access to internet in these part of the world has made it possible that more and more of these music clips find their way on Youtube so that even people here in the West can look and listen to music and artists from all corners of the world. The Rebel Up! dj`s will play a personal Youtube selection of unknown lo-fi pop, digital folk psyche clips straight out of this neverending treasure cave, all projected on a big screen (inside & outside) and in full sound.

Loyal to the Rebel Up! philosophy, this night is a fundraiser for a local, independent NGO: the Brussels foundation Les Petits Samurais, that offers basic help to children from immigrants who are without papers and without assured accomodation. The organisation will give a short presentation during this evening.

It’s about time for a steamy third Rebel Up! Soundclash night to give this Brussels winter some deserved sunshine! Expect a fully packed world trip in music where all borders are strictly taboo and in which the spirit of the global diaspora lives. A bit of acoustic ethnographics, a dose of innovative lo-fi & hi-fi electronics and a heavy dash of worldly kitsch. Or for the purists; Soukous, Afro funk, Soca, Roots, Balkan, Mestizo, Chaabi, Funana, Asiatic funk, Indian folkpop, Arabian techofolk, Global Bass & much more.

DJ Sebcat & Palm M of the nomadic Rebel Up! collective will serve up a tasty mishmash of sunny sound, while guest dj’s Brian Hainaut & Jean Mikili (Bal du Canal/BXL) will bring tropical tunes from the Brussels brousse that will make you shake, chouffé chouffé!

Rebel Up! is a not-for-profit collective that organises fundraiser nights for small charity organisations. Tonight’s funds will go to the Belgian/Rwandese humanitarian organisation Igitego Inyange ASBL who support education and healthcare projects in Rwandese villages.

Paolo Davanzo and Lisa Marr have been touring the world for the past 20 years as musicians, filmmakers and ambassadors of cinematic goodwill. When they are not running the Echo Park Film Center in Los Angeles, they tour the world singing folks songs to accompany silent Super 8 films they have shot on their travels. As winter slowly approaches our northern hemisphere, Rebel Up! brings you a fresh harvest of all the warmest sounds our sonic biotope has to offer on either side of the equator.

This month’s edition will feature a special DJ set from Brooklyn’s Brian Shimkovitz a.k.a. Awesome Tapes From Africa. After researching the local hip-hop movement in Ghana he’s accumulated hundreds of cassette tapes of rare African music from Zimbabwe to Ethiopia to Senegal. He has been sharing his bounty through his immensely popular blog, and now on the road as a DJ.  Expect a highly explosive and danceable trip to the amazing music cultures of an entire continent!

Also from the US is Process Rebel with his nextstep fusion of bass music that traverses the electronic music diaspora with a lean towards dub, dubstep, post-dancehall and global ghetto tech.

Our nomad Rebel Up! DJs and VJ will follow a varied audiovisual trail, trespassing the borders between musical genres by bringing together elements from the furthest terrestrial realms and digital corners into an ethnopsychedelic potpourri that is as rooted in tribal sensibilities as it is in the labyrinthine urban jungles of the information age.

Since we almost didn’t collect any money for the good cause last time, the charity for this edition will again be Stichting Mopti, an organization active in the poorest parts of rural Mali. With its gardening and horticulture projects for women, Mopti aims to support basic subsistence needs independent of market fluctuations and promote the self-organization of women. From this night on Rebel Up! will be hitting the Brussels global scene almost every 2 months with a Soundclash night at Bar Recyclart, the cafe part of the special Recyclart venue in the centre of Brussels. More parties & special nights to be expected!

The Rebel Up crew & friends will play their newest, oldest and most kitsch global sounds in a tasty mishmash with all spices and flavours. Tonight’s special guest is Timeblind, aka Chris Sattinger from the States, who travels on many musical roads such as dancehall, jungle, hip-hop, proto-dubstep,global dub and tropical tunes. He has been part of the New York illbient scene in the early 00′s,trotted around India for a while and is currently living & working in Berlin, the hotspot for experimental music. His set will be a combination of a live PA set with a dj set in heavy global and tropical spheres! Do check out his site or myspace for sounds & mixes.

We will also be joined by mystery man Sonido del Principe, honcho of the excellent Generation Bass blog. Expect some chewed up cumbia, mashed up with some serious bass and latino & caribbean sounds. It will be impossible not to shake

The charity cause tonight will an organisation in Kenya, named Global Giving. It’s a project that aids a nursery school and rescue center for orphans and vulnerable children in the Kibera slums. The organization is all locally run — and supports about 100 children. Like so many orgs, they have received funding cuts from their major donor and are really in need of growing their funding base. We’ll go around with a collection box during the night and as always we donate the profits from the doormoney.

Friday 27th of november VJ M and SebCat will be playing at an Indian fundraiser night, organisised by the good folks of Party 4 Peace. The night is in aid of Belgian organisation Telluris, which we know and support by heart. VJ M will show his Telluris documentary about the Munda tribe and projects. See here a version of it:

VJ M & SebCat will be doing their Rajasthani live cinema set, a live musical-cinematic experience in which images of the big camel fair in Pushkar, Rajasthan will be mixed with sound recordings. In 2007 we made a trip to India and stayed 2 months in Rajasthan where we composed a roadmovie;  a story without words, but with vivid Rajasthani music and colourfull images as a narrative for an intimate experience.  Here a short version of it:

This one will be a *Rio vs Sampa Brazilian cidade clash*. We will guests from Brazil’s 2 biggest and most famous cities; Rio de Janeiro & Sao Paulo. Anyone familiar with these cities will know it; these cities are overly vibrant with music, culture and liveliness! For that very same reason they are also each other’s nemesis and created some good old rivalry. The Carioca’s (inhabitants of Rio) think themselves as the most life enjoying people while the Paulista’s (inhabitants of Sampa -or Sao Paulo-) see themselves as the centre of Brazilian culture. Oh dear, but on this night the rivalry will have a delicious taste where Maga Bo and DJ Tudo will be giving their best sounds.

Maga Bo (US/BR/Rio) is the messenger of things exotic, broken and mashed up. expect a live dj set with furious bass line that will wobble on capoeira rhythms. Ever touring the world as a soundman and general globalteer, it will be his 3rd time(!) already at Rebel Up! but it’s always an honour to have him. DJ Tudo (BR) hails from Sampa and this is only the first time he comes to Holland! His sound is a varied mix of samba, bossa nova, capoeira , forro and other Brazilian dance styles with some sweet breakbeat and electro bass added for full effect.

During the night, your faithfull Rebel Up! crew will take care of globetrotting dance sounds, cult spheres and colourfull visuals. We also will be joined by US ex-patriate Process Rebel, living in A’dam nowadays. He’ll bring a full clash of rootsical mashups with a global ’up yours’ attitude

We also will have a special photo exhibition by Enno de Jong (A’dam, 1967), who has made an amazing serie about the street Children of São Martinho, Rio.
