From this night on Rebel Up! will be hitting the Brussels global scene almost every 2 months with a Soundclash night at Bar Recyclart, the cafe part of the special Recyclart venue in the centre of Brussels. More parties & special nights to be expected!

The Rebel Up crew & friends will play their newest, oldest and most kitsch global sounds in a tasty mishmash with all spices and flavours. From the most crunchy cumbia to Carribean powersoca, Brazilian carimba, Greek rembetika, Siamese soul, Arabic dabke, African soukous funk, Balkan disco, dub, roots and whatnot. We’re starting up at 21:00 and taking to 01:00, hopefully we can stretch it a bit longer if a lot of you happy people can’t stop dancing.

Since this night is for free and non-profit, we would like to raise money & awareness for special charity organisation. This time we have selected the organisation Chakana, a NGO who provides support to Indians in the barren highlands of the Andes. Their main projects are focussed on building greenhouses, teaching ecological agriculture and providing education for children. Tonight’s special guest is Timeblind, aka Chris Sattinger from the States, who travels on many musical roads such as dancehall, jungle, hip-hop, proto-dubstep,global dub and tropical tunes. He has been part of the New York illbient scene in the early 00′s,trotted around India for a while and is currently living & working in Berlin, the hotspot for experimental music. His set will be a combination of a live PA set with a dj set in heavy global and tropical spheres! Do check out his site or myspace for sounds & mixes.

We will also be joined by mystery man Sonido del Principe, honcho of the excellent Generation Bass blog. Expect some chewed up cumbia, mashed up with some serious bass and latino & caribbean sounds. It will be impossible not to shake

The charity cause tonight will an organisation in Kenya, named Global Giving. It’s a project that aids a nursery school and rescue center for orphans and vulnerable children in the Kibera slums. The organization is all locally run — and supports about 100 children. Like so many orgs, they have received funding cuts from their major donor and are really in need of growing their funding base. We’ll go around with a collection box during the night and as always we donate the profits from the doormoney.

Friday 27th of november VJ M and SebCat will be playing at an Indian fundraiser night, organisised by the good folks of Party 4 Peace. The night is in aid of Belgian organisation Telluris, which we know and support by heart. VJ M will show his Telluris documentary about the Munda tribe and projects. See here a version of it:

VJ M & SebCat will be doing their Rajasthani live cinema set, a live musical-cinematic experience in which images of the big camel fair in Pushkar, Rajasthan will be mixed with sound recordings. In 2007 we made a trip to India and stayed 2 months in Rajasthan where we composed a roadmovie;  a story without words, but with vivid Rajasthani music and colourfull images as a narrative for an intimate experience.  Here a short version of it:

This one will be a *Rio vs Sampa Brazilian cidade clash*. We will guests from Brazil’s 2 biggest and most famous cities; Rio de Janeiro & Sao Paulo. Anyone familiar with these cities will know it; these cities are overly vibrant with music, culture and liveliness! For that very same reason they are also each other’s nemesis and created some good old rivalry. The Carioca’s (inhabitants of Rio) think themselves as the most life enjoying people while the Paulista’s (inhabitants of Sampa -or Sao Paulo-) see themselves as the centre of Brazilian culture. Oh dear, but on this night the rivalry will have a delicious taste where Maga Bo and DJ Tudo will be giving their best sounds.

Maga Bo (US/BR/Rio) is the messenger of things exotic, broken and mashed up. expect a live dj set with furious bass line that will wobble on capoeira rhythms. Ever touring the world as a soundman and general globalteer, it will be his 3rd time(!) already at Rebel Up! but it’s always an honour to have him. Both times he played with us, it was a FULL house! Check out his site or myspace for sounds & mixes.

DJ Tudo (BR) hails from Sampa and this is only the first time he comes to Holland! His sound is a varied mix of samba, bossa nova, capoeira , forro and other Brazilian dance styles with some sweet breakbeat and electro bass added for full effect.

During the night, your faithfull Rebel Up! crew will take care of globetrotting dance sounds, cult spheres and colourfull visuals. We also will be joined by US ex-patriate Process Rebel, living in A’dam nowadays. He’ll bring a full clash of rootsical mashups with a global ’up yours’ attitude

We also will have a special photo exhibition by Enno de Jong (A’dam, 1967), who has made an amazing serie about the street Children of São Martinho, Rio. We go Argentinian all the way on this night! This night is in collaboration with WORM.

DJ Pinchado (Julio Lozano) hails from Buenos Aires and is born and raised in the old harbour area of La Boca, home to local footie club Boca Juniors and birthplace of the elegant tango. None of that tango twisting tonight, but some seriously psychedelic cumbia! The sensual cumbia has become popular once again throughout all of  South America and reason for this is a fresh wave of young artists who experiment with this old afro-influenced folk style. In Argentina a lot of artists have started creating experimental cumbia sounds, where dub, hiphop and electronica is added to this hefty stew. Pinchado’s special sound floats inbetween dubby spheres and electronic Boca beats as a very danceable cocktail! Excpect a live/dj set with the freshest dance music from Buenos Aires. !QUE CALOR!

Los Siquicos Litoraleños (AR)
From the outland countryside surrounding the small town Curuzú Cuatiá in the province Corrientes of North East Argentina, comes a exceedingly rare treat for the ears. Los Siquicos Litoraleños is a unique band formed in 2004. Originally an all improvisational freeform band, their music soon developed into an unclassifiable, highly original style incorporating elements of  cumbia, subtle noise, lo-fi tape manipulation, chamamé (the popular folk music of Corrientes), the angular guitars of Beefheart’s Magic band and a rich variety of non-rock rhythms. Omdat de herfst stilaan nadert, organiseert Rebel Up! Soundclash een heuse tropische dansavond in Utrecht!  Het warme karakter van het ecologisch geknutselde Vechtclub theater zal perfect passen voor de sfeer van deze avond.

DJ Pinchado (Julio Lozano) komt uit Buenos Aires en is geboren en getogen in de ruige havenwijk La Boca, de thuishaven van lokale voetbalclub Boca Juniors en ook geboorteplaats van de elegante Tango. Op deze avond niks van dat, maar wel vette cumbia. De sensuele cumbia is nu superpopulair in Zuid Amerika door een lichting van jonge artiesten die knutselen met deze oude volksstijl. In Argentinië specialiseren artiesten zich met experimentele geluiden, waaraan hiphop, dub en electronica wordt toegevoegd. Pinchado’s geluid hangt tussen dubby sferen en electronische kitsch in als een zeer dansbare cocktail! Verwacht een speciale live/dj set met de allernieuwste dansmuziek uit Buenos Aires. !QUE CALOR!

De internationale crew van Rebel Up! DJ’s & VJ’s zullen door de avond heen zorgen voor speelse tropische geluiden en visuele kunsten die naar Argentijnse en Zuid Amerikaanse sferen zullen knipogen. De Utregse global dj DJ Tommi (Fuerza/Balkan Beatz) zal de avond openen waarbij hij zijn cumbia hart zal laten bonzen met flinke danskrakers. Ah yeah, Rebel Up time again!
Do we actually ever sleep? hardly…

We’ll be joined by the eclectic Tupolev Sound Crash crew. TSC hail from the euro capital of Brussels and are our southern neighbours  in sound. Back home in Belgium, they crash many a global party (such as the Couleur Cafe festival) to bring a heavy brew of mashed sounds, from global ghettotech to ethnological sounds, any way the wind takes their aircraft!

Also our faithfull Polish friend Vega Selectah will again select his finest audible crops of eartickling sounds and dubs. We’ll be sizzling and grinding!

Other fresh and dusty selections will come from our hands in the oiled Dutch-Franco-Belgo trinity combination that you are used to. Tonight’s VJ duties will be done by our Argentinian lady crew of Normal Con Alas. Expect the unexpected.
If you feel like bouncing to the shaking marimba of an electric witchdoctor while spicy curry beats and tasty accordeons please your body and ears, come out and play with us!

The charity of the night is Telluris India, a Belgian organisation that provides aid to the Munda tribes in the forest state of Jharkhand in Northern India. These tribes are part of the Adivasi caste and are the native inhabitants of this region. Their culture and way of life dates back to before the creation of Hinduism, 5000 years ago. Nature means all to these tribes; they have a natural religion and worship the nature around them.

By the hands of corrupted authorities that favour industrialisation, mining and lumberjacking, the Munda are on the verge to lose their land and culture forever. The forests have already been robbed of 70% of their original size. As a result, their land is plagued by erosion, droughts and the decline of flora, wildlife and trees!

The forest offers ecological diversity, life, medicinal quailities and protection from erosion and because the Munda are small time farmers and therefore need the forest in order to survive. Telluris helps the tribes with planting of new crops and medicinal plants, the digging of water wells, spreading knowledge about organic farming and other projects linked to their direct environment. The tribes can decide for themselves in which facilities they would like to receive aid in by Telluris, instead of such choices being made for them like most NGO’s do. Villagers come together to discuss, unite and motivatie each other for achieving their prime goals and Telluris helps them fullfilling these wishes. Nearly all the local employees at Telluris who work with the Munda, are Munda themselves en educated by Telluris. At Telluris, the most important thing is to actively let people take part in the process where at every interaction, knowledge is exchanged!

Free Ahmed Isa!

It has been more than 3 years ago that the immigration detention centre at Schiphol airport burned down. An illegal government prison without fireproof materials, so it was a disaster just waiting to happen. 11 people died that october night in 2005. Libian immigrant Ahmed Isa is suspected of starting the fire by flicking a cigarette butt -say what?- He has been in jail ever since that night and still without trail. Testimonies by many of his immigrant inmates have proven that Ahmed Isa is innocent and that the insecure fire facilities are to blame. The government however, chose to turn him into a scapegoat. Normally his trial should have taken place this week, hoping that this night could be celebrated as his night of freedom. Unfortunately his trial has been postponed till august. Instead, let’s shake the  shackles.

Time for another sweet Saturday of Rebel Up! sounds.
A few weeks ago we played at the OT301 at an amazing Ethiopian Azmari night -the Ililta Band with Chalachew Ashenafi-, thanks to Andy, Terrie & Colin for having us. It was nice to see some of our regular RU visitors too!

This saturday we’ll be having 2/5 BZ straight from Istanbul! Perhaps not a famous household name, but all the better. Someone who has been a John Peel favorite surely can’t disappoint.

Serhat Koksal aka 2/5 BZ has done 2 of those famous Peel sessions, which have both been translated into a crafty cutted ep’s. Well worth checking out, listen to the sounds on his myspace page.

2/5 BZ mixes rough beats and sample cut-ups with political narratives which go from east to west and vice versa.  True spheres from the oil-orient that is! Add some bizarre visuals of 70′s & 80′s ’Nabucco’ cult movies to the mix, along with *no exotic* political images and you’ll experience what 2/5 BZ is all about.

Lately he has been occupied with special unrooted global movements, such as the Venezualan and Iranian cultural psyche and his latest audiovisial work ‘No Cultural pipeline Dialogue“. What to expect then? Who really knows, but what is sure is that an accidental occidental grip will take your attention and make you sway to blurred eurasian pixels loaded with heavy static. Better come and find out!

Our 2nd live guest of the night will be none other than Amsterdam local (and Rebel Up supporter & OCCII volunteer) Zea! Instead of a 2-piece duo,  Zea is continued as Arnold’s solo project for now (plus he has become the newest member of The Ex since a month!). Charity Matters, we stick with Islamic Relief for the 3rd and last time tonight. Families in Gaza and Palestina keep on needing your support. The majority of Gaza citizens are still without water, electricity or gas. Food is running out, and around 80,000 people are estimated to have been left homeless.

Islamic Relief is an international relief and development organization which has been working in the Palestinian territories since 1994. In spite of ongoing blockades and enduring limited humanitarian access, Islamic Relief Palestine has managed to supply and will continue to supply food parcels, medical supplies and blankets to the people of Gaza, co-operating with the Palestinian Ministry of Health, World Health Organization, and other aid agencies in order to alleviate the pains of the people of Gaza. Your donation may seem but a tiny step, but lots of tiny steps combined will surely enable something of a positive leap to occur in the lives of our fellow humans in the Gaza strip!
